How future proof is the RTX 3090?

Hey everyone,

In the market for a gpu upgrade. I game at 4K, and want to run games at max settings 60fps minimum. Will this card be able to do do this for the next 3 to 5 years or am I dreaming? Is it worth waiting for the next gen? Will this card get caught out by the increase in graphical fidelity that will trickle down to pc games from next gen consoles?

All input appreciated.

Personally I'd buy the 3080 or 6800 xt and then use the money saved in a couple of years to buy whatever is hot then

The RTX 3090 is future proof for NV untill they release something new. we might see a 3080ti or even a titan yet, i think that depends on how well 6800xt 6900xt does, price wise and i will say recommended price wise the AMD cards per performance are the better buy if you can buy one with out being scalped on price. release stock will be
the key to that. Going by the 3000 series from NV and the AMD cpu launch expect higher prices and low stock levels.

No

Close Thread. :p

You'd be better off getting a 3080 now and upgrade to a 4080 in 2-3yrs, the 3080 will give you 90% of the performance as a 3090 and the 4080 (with loads more VRAM) will give you more performance than the 3090 and the combined cost of the 3080 & 4080 will only be about the same as buying a 3090.

Accept slightly less performance in years 1-3 and then get more in yrs 3-5 (when the games will really need it)

Every release out classes the previous release, but you have to wait 2 years, thats 2 years of gaming and the 3090 does more than game. and in 2 years it will be the same story, wait 2 years and out class that release also. just buy what you want for you.

A 3090 can not do this now.

Worse still NVidia and the game devs are making it even harder to get much future proofing into the cards by making SLI next to useless.

If a 3090 fits the bill for what you want to do today with your games then get one as the future is hard to predict.

Look at it like this:

Rough Prices:
3080 - £800
3090 - £1500

Diff in performance 10% tops

After two years:
Sell 3080 for £300
Buy 4080/5080 for £800

Total expenditure £1300 and in two years the card will be far quicker than the 3090 with proper RTX

It's a bad time to buy a GPU as AMD having more VRAM may push texture size without improving visuals (AMD's Crysis moment), while Nvidia is way ahead in RT. Hopper / RNDA3 is going to be a big jump over what we see today due to competition. 3080 or 6800 would be the sensible choice if you really need a GPU now.

IMO 3090 is soon to be outperformed by the 3080ti, which will also be cheaper. The joys of competition.

I think Nvidia will throw some quadro compute optimisations the 3090's way, to make up for the worst value, shortest lived top dog of all time.

I’m thinking of going sli with 2 2080ti’s 3090 isn’t fast enough for over a grand sorry .

Would not go SLI IMO. While it works fine with select games, heck I use SLI on one of my rigs but with its lack of support on newer titles, just go single strongest card. IMO sell the 2080Ti and get say a 3080 or 6800XT for performance uplift 100% of the time rather then relying on SLI.

GPU's are never future proof as such, they have built in obsolescence.

Nvidia also gimp their drivers . . . . . . . NAAAAT.

Seriously though, if they were future proof Nvidia could have beefed them up more, sold the 3090 as 3080 and 3090 could be dual chip again.

3090 won't be outperformed by 3080 Ti, the clue is in the names.:)
