The circular saw overcuts and the rivetted sheet metal are a shame

Would be amazing if it was more exotic (e.g. solid tungsten) with no obvious signs of installation.

Yes, a solid block of metal would have been far better.

Now there will be two schools, those that want to open it and those who want to preserve it. Unless someone comes forward as responsible for it, the former school will likely win out.

I was thinking more from the perspective of the welding not being visible on the outside - surely you could put the welding torch on a boom.

I think the joint would still be visable on the outside, heat discolouration and the actual welding to fill in the gap.

Don't need welding. You can use epoxy (and rivets). That will make it super strong.
