Hi wouldn’t mind a bit of advice. I currently have a 2500k that I want to replace with a 5950x cpu. Will be used for 3d work and not much gaming. I want to keep the costs down so plan on using components from my existing pc.

I have an original Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU cooler that I can get a upgrade mount for £15. Would it be worth buying this or just replacing it with a Noctua NH-D14 or similar.

In terms of gfx card I have a GTX 680 which will be going into the system until stock / prices level out.

Also I don’t know what motherboard, ram or M.2 drive would be good to get.

Any help much appreciated as I haven’t upgraded in over 8 years.

Cheers

Hi

Do you need a 16 core cpu the 5900x 12 core is another option.

The silver arrow is a quality cooler so if you can get an Am4 bracket then do so.

Msi x570 tomahawk Wi-Fi is one off the best value motherboards there is a b550 version which doesn't have Wi-Fi.

Ram you want 3200mhz or 3600mhz but how much do you want. 3d work I guess more is better.

M2 drives there are pcie4 or pcie3 , 4 is the latest and fastest but more expensive but will offer faster data transfer if that something you need to consider.pcie 3 is still very capable.

Cheers, will get the bracket ordered today then.

Will 3600mhz ram improve performance noticeably or is that more for gaming? 32GB would be better. I guess it will have to be Corsair Vengeance LPX due to the cooler.

Is the MSI B550 motherboard the same as a X570 apart from wifi? Dont really need WiFi.

Whats a good value PCIe 4 M.2? Are they all much the same.

Thanks.

X570 motherboards offer more ports and more pcie lanes so if you have 2 m2 drives installed it wont affect gpu performance.

3200mhz v 3600mhz may be beneficial but you would have to check your software to see if it makes a diffrence with the extra bandwith. You want lots of ram.

I would also check if the software uses gpu acceleration .

M2 take your pick there's so many to choose from but you can get 2x m2 pcie3 drives for the price of 1 pcie4 m2 . It all depends on how time critical your projects are.

yeah the 5950x is what you want, not the 5900 - cores cores cores for rendering.

The more ram the better, for my work workstation I have 128gb (may seem overkill to some but on 3ds max I sometimes hit this limit with corona)
it all depends on the complexity of the scenes you work with. I work in arch viz and some of the scenes we have are crazy big so memory is a must.

I would not go below 32gb at all and would most likely recommend 64 if you plan to do other things while rendering (depends on size of your scenes I guess and if youre just a hobbyist or professional?)

GPU - depends if you're doing real time rendering? if you are, then obviously a better card is needed, if not...I wouldn't worry too much. Some machines in my office have really old quadro cards in and are fine.

m2 drives would be good for sure, I have the 970 evo m2 and Thats fine , I use two of them, one is for aftereffects work and is a dream for speed. 500gb is cheap right now too.

Motherboard I don't have a preference for a work workstation / don't have a recommendation.

Agreed on hold out for the 5950x, even if you have to wait a bit for it to come into stock.
I'm running the 3950x on an Asus Prime X570-P. It's an entry-level X570 board with basic features but with good VRMs & stability.
Doing lots of Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine, ZBrush, Substance Painter etc.
I've been pushing it hard every day since work from home started, no problems at all.
I went with 48GB of 3200mhz, you're right in that the extra speed is pretty marginal & mostly seen in gaming (even then, only certain games). Quantity -> Speed for our work.
As for the cooler, you might as well try the Silver Arrow, it's supposed to be pretty good. I use a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro, it copes very well, although it is massive. I'd try the Silver Arrow & if you're not happy with temps, then you can think about an upgrade.
Although I have an M2 drive of some type , it's not that critical for 3D work, usually. Ultra high-speed storage would be more important if you're doing a lot of After Effects/ Nuke/ Premier, pushing really big datasets. Obviously, there are some specialist 3D workflows where it might play more of a part.
GPU - The GTX 680 will be by far a weak link, probably even if you're not doing GPU rendering. It's still responsable for pushing the polys & textures for the viewport. But I do agree, it's a crappy time to buy, so needs must. You might consider an interim GTX 1660 which you could hopefully re-sell at a fairly minimal loss after 6 months ?
Power Supply - will you be re-using or buying something new ? The 5950x is not especially power-hungry given it's amazing performance. I do like to run strictly 80+ gold for work machines. If you're planning a new GPU later, you should probably consider an 850w as the new NVidia cards can be very power ungry. Unfortunately, they're also in short supply, so might be best to buy later with your Graphics card when stocks recover.

Is it for work work or playing around work? What's your budget? What exactly is your workflow? Are you an employee? Can your employer ship you something?

Hi, its for personal use. I need it so I can get my portfolio together.

I dont really have a budget but would like to keep costs down. I have just ordered a 5950x but dont know when it will arrive so it could be a while.

In the meantime I have decide on the rest of the system.

I am thinking so far:

Msi x570 tomahawk
32gb 3600mhz Corsair Vengeance LPX
M.2 drive (not sure)

I have a old 750W XFX psu that I can use.

GFX card can wait till a later date and make do with the 680
