To replace my R9 200 series

could not find it at this price anymore - seems to be around £230 now. do you think its still the best GPU for the price?
would you recommend just going for the GPU or do I need to upgrade my whole setup?

What resolution are you gaming at 1080p?

TBH a 480 is much the same as a 580 is much the same as a 590.

The 5600XT/5700/5700XT prices are high at the moment IMO so not as much value as they used to be - a 580 would suffice at 1080p IMO.

Although I'm unsure if you can stretch to that price

If you can't google RX 580 and find one with 8gbs of RAM below £160 - it will 1080p for the considerable future

The 590 really isn't that much faster than the 290. Maybe 20% on its best day. It also uses about as much power. The 570/580/590 are all just rebrands of the 480 from 2016 with higher clocks (the 590 is also a new manufacting process, but all it brought was slightly higher clocks at much higher power consumption). The 5000 series cards are actual new GPUs and a new architecture, and have much better performance per watt. The 5500 XT sits around 580/590 performance, scaling up to the 5700 XT that's close to a 2070 Super/1080 Ti. I'd strongly advise on moving to a single card if you upgrade, personally. Far less heat and power consumption, and SLI/Crossfire are near-unsupported in newer titles anyway. A 5700 (non-XT) would about match your dual 290 setup in terms of performance as a single card.

I upgraded my r9 290 to a msi 5700xt a few months ago... Im a casual gamer too and everything runs smoother, plus the MSI is a tiny card compared to the huge XFX r9 290 plus no sagging either, so less strain on the motherboard

It's a bad time to buy a GPU and it sounds like you're not desperate to upgrade. Any chance dusting and cleaning the card could quiten it down?

I think the fans are just worn out mate, the card, like the rest of my old setup were mint still when I upgraded during mid-Lockdown 1.0.

Yep, I don't have to spend the whole lot obviously - and I'll be making a bit of Dollar back on the R9.

I'm not an 'ultra gamer,' so I don't need big frame rates at 1080p; I seriously can't see myself being able to or wanting to go bigger than a 24" HD monitor any time soon...

If you're only targeting 60fps at 1080p then I think spending £400-£500 is a huge overkill. You could go below £200 and easily get that performance, I'd recomend 5600 XT (Upto £280), 1660 Super (upto £220), 5500 XT (upto £150), RX 580 (upto £150). All big upgrades on a R9 280
