Qualifying should be a laugh; F2 qualifying a total mess of traffic, Schumacher and Nissany colliding - Mick 18th on the grid

Mick'll get a penalty for that, surely? Can't see him starting ahead of 21st. It'll be a tough job clawing his way back to the points tomorrow and Sunday. Q1 in F1 is going to be a right laugh, could get some surprises there?

Well. Russell beats Mr. Friday in FP1. That's a great start for him.

Fitipaldi and Aitken have much more the showings I'd expect from stand-ins, although obviously the jump up for them is much more than for Russell, at a 1s and 0.4s behind their teammates. If they can improve from there, they're both in for good weekends.

Great to see from Russell although obviously not necessarily representative of anything. Good point from Sky team that Albon really needs to perform with Hamilton absent.

Aitken was also on the hard tyres compared to Latifi on the mediums... for some reason. Williams were the only team to avoid the softs in this session.

Track limits at T8 altered from FP1 to FP2

“A lap time achieved during any practice session or the race by leaving the track and cutting behind the red and white kerb on the exit of Turn 8, will result in that lap time being invalidated by the stewards,” confirmed Masi.

“Each time any car fails to negotiate Turn 8 Exit by using the track, teams will be informed via the official messaging system.

“On the third occasion of a driver failing to negotiate Turn 8 Exit by using the track during the race, he will be shown a black and white flag, any further cutting will then be reported to the stewards.”

In the event of a driver running wide into Turn 7 they have been told that they are permitted to cut behind the inside of Turn 8 in order to assist in not impeding a rival.

So, still not only using the track then? Red and white kerb is not the track. The track ends at the white line, kerb is beyond that.

I'd be hated as the race director. The white line defines the track. Beyond that is No mans land... :D

Bottas is actually quicker than Russell. He just needs to stop bunging it over the track limits...

I think Bottas is still favourite for Quali, but it's likely to be close.

Didn't he have the 3 fastest sectors in P1 too, but never put it all together?

Bottas didn't set a fast lap this time though.
Well he tried but couldn't manage to keep it inside the track limits so his time got deleted.

He seems a little rattled so far but as he's all too aware - free practice ultimately counts for nothing.

Just a thought but perhaps Hamilton might retire at the end of this season if Russell does really well? That would make way for Russell. Then he'd go out on a high note - Verstappen is going to be serious competition next year and could well beat him.

No danger; Hamilton wants to beat Schumacher's record; he's not going to just move over because someone finishes 1st or 2nd in a car that most folk think Latifi could win in
