I don't know why people bother because anyone who looks at it (or hears it) will know it's fake from a mile off.

if it's a regular joe who doesn't give a stuff about cars they're gonna think "there's a knob in a flash car being an idiot"

if it's a petrolhead who does care about cars they're gonna think "that's a 4 pot i'm hearing, that's sad dude"

i remember being passed by an e30 "m3" with a distinctly not-a-straight-6 exhaust note

No. The E30 M3 is famously a 4 cylinder.
