Hi,
Been wrestling my brain on this for a while.

Looking to upgrade my 9 year old PC consisting of a i5 2500k, 8gb RAM DDR4 and a GTX 970. Thinking CPU, MOBO and RAM to start.

I mainly play battlefield v. Occasionally stroll into GTAV. Manage 60fps on low settings.
I have the occasional lag where it's struggling but gameplay is fine tbh.

I only have a 1080p monitor and not looking to buy one really as graphics are fine and they're not that important to me. Which means there isn't much point investing in something i5/i7 /5600 ish with a 3060 that i was thinking about as I'm limited to 1080p.

Needs to get me through 5 years so the next GTA and the next couple of Battlefields. Can't see my self playing much beyond a couple of years as we look to start a family.

Not looking to spend a heap of money. £300 or less. So what is the best value set up for 1080p that will probably be good for a few years? Maybe an AMD 3100?

Thanks!

I think you're underestimating how demanding 1080p can be, especially if you're planning on churning through the next few BF games.

The 3100 is more of a sidegrade from your CPU, I would not go below a 3600 or 10400.

Wow and I thought my i5 3570k and 980ti was old haha, I’m looking to upgrade q1 next year so think I may just wait for the new Intel chips to release perhaps

Echo the above (@Tetras) - for a significant bump a 3600 (£188) coupled with a B450 MAX (£88) and 16GB of memory (£80) would be worth extra ~£50 compared to the minor bump of a 3100 (made the same jump for my son last year). The 2500K is/was a mighty CPU - especially clocked - and still pulls it's weight in older games.

If you've not done so already, clock the 2500K to ~4.4GHz - an attainable clock which shouldn't involve much tweaking (may even succeed on auto) for easy free bump while you wait.

*The B450 MAX will accommodate 5000 CPUs in the New Year too.

I've had my eye on the 3600 but the price doesn't seem to be coming down? 220?

Yeah it’s old, I was very surprised it ran bfv after not gaming for a few years. I'm running 4.6ghz, anything higher was unstable. Have been from day one. It is a great chip and has lasted 8/9 years, hence i'm hoping to find a similar level chip for the next few years.

you’ve probably confirmed what I thought anyway. Time to try AMD Again.
