Monstrosity

Looks great, how easily did that all come away from the wall? If you did it yourself.

Something similar in the OH's house we're looking to tackle. Has a gas fire with a protruding pipe that can be capped off easily enough by a pro.

Planning to open it up just like that and finish it up nicely - though not looking to replace the fire with anything.

Thanks :D

I didn't do it myself - it was all in the price

There was a gas pipe coming through the wall right into the back from the garage into the fire opening.

There was a surprising amount of rubble generated and it took them a full day to disconnect / cap off the pipe and pull the new flue liner in

The second day they installed the fire board in the alcove, the slate hearth and oak mantke then slim the breast

Thanks @Dolly I've currently got a 1m*1m opening which will be lined and tiled, but only a 450mm depth plus the legs of the fire surround so probably 550mm max, yours looks like its sitting quite far back in the opening?

Yes it does sit back from the opening - that’s where the opening is to connect to the flue. Ours sits back about 30cm from the front. The depth of the i5 is about 43 cm.

That looks great! Clean and modern. I guess you were told it doesn’t meet hetas regs though? 300mm minimum hearth required in front.

mine doesn’t meet regs for distance from mantel. ‍♂️

I have another slab of Granite that should sit on the floor, I was going to site it in with the flooring level but wanted a cleaner look, if I ever sell the house I will lay it over the laminate to suit regs :)

Just on the final stages or rebuilding our chimney, also pulled the floor up and installed a dpm, insulation and screed.

This is the original fireplace, I don't think any part of it was central to anything else. It was obviously plastered etc but just had an open fire.

After removing the fire it quickly became obvious that altering the chimney breast was not going to be possible so I removed it.

New concrete foundations for the chimney, new block work and ready to dpm and insulate the floor.

As it stands now with decorative brickwork and slate hearth, ready for a nice chunky oak beam and some engineered oak flooring once the screed has dried.
