Linus got this one right - nvidia’s CMP cards

basically Linus said that Nvidia is using the CMP to cash in on the crypto craze. and Nvidia doesnt care about gamers really as every one of those cores can be used in a Geoforce card as there is a finite amount of silicon wafers to make GPUs with in the first place. if demand for the mining cards are high then eventually the "good" gaming card cores will be used for these mining cards as history has proven.

also he has touch on a very important moral issue which is that these CMP cards are single use cards as they cannot be reused by anyone other than miners. once this craze is over, these cards will end up in the landfill...

and finally, he said that nvidia has done this ensure A) they profit from the mining craze B) by creating these single use cards, it ensures there wont be a flood of RTX30 cards in the used market when the crypto crashes therefore protects nvidia's future position so that their RTX40 cards are not undermined by a load of very cheap RTX30 cards in the used market.

you get a lot of people buying into Nvidia's BS on the 3060 & CMP cards and thinking the supply issue will be magically gone in doing this by Nvidia and believing Nvidia is some kind of GPU messiah...and it is clear it is completely the opposite.

Supply will be more restricted and future generation cards will attract higher MSRP for sure.

and no doubt nvidia share will triple by the end of the year.

Makes sense - those CMP cards are worthless, when they became unprofitable they will immediately end up in a landfill and that's what Nvidia wants, so there are no second hand gaming cards to buy

I knew this as soon as they announced the CMP cards.
Any miners worth his salt will not buy a CMP card. Why on earth buy a single use card? I'm sure they will bypass the locks quickly.

OP you should have embedded the video like this..

Thanks mate.

but miner will be buying these for the sole reason of supply. There is so few RTX coming out of the factory door they have to go to distributors to pay corrupt deals to get their hands on load of RTX.

but if there are plenty of these CMP to buy readily available then it might be a good option if pricing and hash rates are favourable of course.

Normal people/casual miners no... but actual proper mining farms will buy everything they can get that turns a profit: they won’t stop buying GTX cards they’ll just buy GTX cards and CMP cards.

If Nvidia can make plenty of CMP cards they wouldn't have a problem supplying normal cards. It doesn't seem likely that there will suddenly be a bounty of CMP cards.

Exactly this. Which is pretty much Linus' point. They're simply taking away silicon that would normally be used to make GPUs to put into the CMP cards. There's no extra cards on the market still.

True, but the proportion of cards that gamers can get their hands on might be higher if miners are leaving certain product lines alone. Realistically they're doing it because they can crank the margins on the mining cards IMO. They know miners will pay the money and they don't want to inadvertently destroy the PC gaming market by failing to supply cards to gamers.

Crank the margins, cut the warranty, no resale value after it is no longer profitable - Nvidia are the only winners.

For miners the issue will be that it'll take a lot longer to recoup initial costs with a mining only card as it has little resale value. You use it until its not profitable then it goes in the bin.
