3090 Worth it Over the 3080??

Hi,

I just managed to buy a RTX3090 FE, admittedly I really wanted the RTX3080 but it is out of stock. Now looking at benchmarks the 3090 is only 20% maximum faster than a 3080, yet over double the price. I am tempted to cancel my order and wait for a 3080. I am wanting to keep what ever GPU I buy for the next 5 years for 4K and 8K DLSS gaming. Is the 3090 the card for me or should I just grab a 3080 instead and cancel my order?

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself. 3090 is worth it if you got the cash.

Understand that 3080FE will be a lot harder to get, and its cooler despite capable doesnt hold a candle to 3090fe.

I do want to keep it. But when I look at it logically, 20% performance for over double the cost it makes it seem overpriced lol.

Yep, the 3080 FE is harder to get, sells out so fast.

its quieter too, dont forget and you have no potential issues that you might run into with 10gb 3080 when it comes to mem.

From a %/£ performance ratio no you are right, but there is more at play than price/perf. + your epeen will enlarge overnight and you will have the best card on the planet.

not to mention mining.
I got 200£ out of my 3090fe just through a bit of mining during night time. Fe 3090 cooler is the daddy better than most AIBs.

I think resale value for the 3090 will hold its price a lot better than an average 3080, in years to come.
I was in the same position as you. Got the 3090 as I couldn't get 3080fe. But in the end I did get 3080 and flogged it got some decent money for it and kept the 3090. My 3090 essentially came free.

edit: yeah that last comment was just kidding.

From a price to performance aspect no not really. There is some nice aspects of course, the 20% uplift in performance in newer 4k games is nice (less at lower res and older games) + Vram and the much better cooler, but in overall performance, not really. At 4k you may have a few games where the VRAM may be an issue, but honestly, be a few settings you can notch down usually to make things a non-issue. 8K of course is a diffrent ball game, but there native res will usually have you running out of steam anyways and DLSS means less VRAM to render the image at lower resolution anyways.

Of course can do something cheeky which few people did I suppose. Flog the 3080FE for more then a 3090FE and means the 3090FE will be cheap as chips. Of course there is now the 1 GPU restriction for FE.

EDIT: well dang seen you edited your OP. You have the 3090FE and wanted a 3080FE, suppose can read entire opposite now of my post.

I'm guessing you mean you bought a 3090 FE, otherwise your post makes no sense at all...

You can sell the 3090 for over £2000 on eBay so no, it makes no sense to cancel your order even if you do change your mind and decide to get a 3080 instead

I doubt either card will last at 4K, never mind 8k for 5 years. Depends on what settings you use, games demands and diss I suppose. I have 3080 and play as many games as I can at 4K right now. Some run at 120 fps and some are already at 50-60. I doubt in 5 years I will be able to run new games at 4K with this card with settings maxed out.

Oops, typo. Updated, yes I bought a 3090. Just trying to decide if to resell the 3090 and buy a 3080, or just keep it.

3090 isn't worth it if you can get an 3080FE. However 3090FE vs an overpriced 3080 AIB isnt a bad deal.

Having said that if you get a 3090FE you're likely to not lose any money on it at resale for quite some time.

Unless a 3080TI drops, depending on vram amount I can see the demand for the 3090 tanking surely.

A 3090FE inside my PC is definitely worth it over a 3080FE I can't buy at all.

Seeing the scalper prices that the AIB 3080's are going for a 3090 isn't much worse value than those, to be honest.

Bird in the hand etc. If you value 4k gaming for the next few months, buy it now. However, I wouldn't aim to keep for 5 yrs, instead sell for a decent price when they stop making them and something else is available for a better price.

Sounds like you be better to cancel it and buy a games console

As the only plan i would make for a GPU is that it be upgraded when needed

My 1080ti served me well for 5 years, I will probably swap it out in 2 years realistically.

But we never know what GPU performance will be needed to run future games at 4K

For example my 2080ti is only around a year old and MSFS 2020 at 4K kills it already less alone another 4 or so years

Really? Thought a 2080ti would be fine with FS as you don't need high fps? Is cpu holding it back, sry can't see sig.
