Is anyone else genuinely worried about the potential for harm this sort of stuff has? Given Twitter tit-for-tats have caused diplomatic incidents, how long before a deep fake ends up starting a war or some sort of physical skirmish?

The speed at which these are improving as well is crazy (not just video but things like voice imitation). First it was sad cases making porn with their favourite celebrity’s head replacing the original performer, now you have those face-swap apps anyone can use to get a laugh out of... are we going to end up in a deranged world where we won’t be able to tell if the person we’re looking at or listening to is really them?

Machine-learning is cray-cray.

You can tell they're fake when they turn their head, deepfakes only seem able to do it well when the face is facing the camera, it can't fake side profiles (yet)

Definitely improving the tech though compared to early versions which had uncanny valley about them

There's no need to do any Deepfake when goverments and people will just lie, do what they want and get away with it anyway.

From a tech standpoint I find it intresting.

Is your lawyer really a talking cat? You'll never know for sure...

Everybody wants to be a cat. Because a cat's the only cat, who knows where it's at.

EDIT: Deep fakes are wrong. It's fake and will cause major problems in the future if they are allowed to go mainstream. They should be banned and a policy should be created now to make it illegal for the generation of deep fakes.

I've been concerned for a good while about Deepfake - It's only going to get better and when it is perfect, and unrecognisable (like the demo in OP), it could be used to devestating effect.

I don't know how you fix a problem like this though...

but is that tiktok not just a lookalike?

edit for clarity: or is it literally just some rando who has has TC's face 'photshopped' over his own?

It's not a lookalike, no.

It's a deepfake CGI version of TCs face on some randomer who probably looks nothing like him.

Wasn't convinced by the effort in the Mandalorian, it looked like a mannequin and his face was just completely the wrong shape.

Those guys did a better job tbh and it would look much better with a budget and polishing.

The Mandalorian Luke was a full CGI face replacent rather than a deep fake and therefore looks less lifelike which the human brain very quickly picked up on.
