I never knew he was a tank commander in WW2!

Double respect!

He also had a well developed and dry sense of humour. This writer remembers one particularly dreary, typically damp and cold afternoon at Germany's Nurburgring. We were killing time chatting, gazing out of the window at the blanket of grey covering the Eifel forests when he said: "Do you know? I can remember driving across there in a tank."

Of course he was also involved in the slogan 'a Mars a day helps you work, rest and play' when he worked in advertising but didn't come up with the phrase which has become a bit of an urban myth :p

He did come up with Opal Fruits - Made to make your mouth water though!

Had a good innings, 97 is pretty good given the year he was born.

He was the voice of F1 for me. Used to come out with some classics.

"unless I'm very much mistaken. I am, I am very much mistaken"
"Look up there, that's the sky"
"Anything can happen in Formula 1, and it usually does"

Half expected him to come back for a little guest commentary from time to time, but he never did from what I remember.

I'm so genuinely sad to see Murray go. First started watching F1 in 1997 and the man's voice was befitting of the sport. He was hilarious with his Murrayisms and he was an absolute gentleman by all accounts. Not only has F1 lost an icon, the entire world has.
