Hi There,

Time has come for my S3 to go, looking at a Porsche Cayman S as I really enjoyed my GT86 before the S3 and people seem to move to Cayman's as an all round better version of the GT86.

Has anyone here got/previously owned one? I'd be keen to listen to your thoughts.

I'm ideally wanting one with Sports Chrono, PSE, Bose. PDK/Manual I don't have a preference on, GT86 was manual and S3 was DSG.

I understand reliability wise they're pretty solid minus the few issues with door cards and headliner in hotter climates.

Not interested in 987/718's. Especially not 718 with the Flat 4 Turbo rather than the Flat 6 NA.

Cheers

I've got a 2013 Cayman S Manual with PSE, PASM, extended leather, Cruise, bi-xenons.

That links above is a scam car, you're looking at 30-31k at the bottom end of the scale for an S, 25k for a non-s at the moment. PDKs outnumber manuals by about 10:1, so if you're not picky then opting for PDK will open you up to wider choice on cars with specs you want.

PSE is great, sports chrono is good, gives sports plus mode, which is faster changes on PDK or auto-blipping/rev matching on manual cars but can bring it's own issues of the adaptive gearbox mounts being expensive to replace if faulty.

I've got the ultra boggo stereo, which actually I think is fine, as it's pretty noisy in the cabin and isn't terrible. There were lots of audio options and having Bluetooth prep for your phone only gives you voice calls, not streaming, so you need additional prep for that. Most steering wheels don't have stereo controls either so no matter what you're fiddling with the headunit, I pretty much just plug a Bluetooth adapter into the 3.5mm audio socket in the glove box and use my phone for streaming/vent mount for satnav.

One thing that took me ages to find out is that sports seats are the standard seats (they used to be the upgrade option for 987), sports seats plus have bigger bolsters, and then an optional 18 way adjustment too on top of that. Heated seats also an option which I don't have, using the car over the last few months I haven't really thought it's needed but personal preference.

PTV gives you an LSD but is very rare and probably the one thing I wish I had.

PASM allows noticeable change between settings, and lowers cars by 20mm vs standard, I never tried a standard passive suspension car though.

Bi-xenons are recommended as the standard lights are a bit pony.

Great car though, would recommend A+++

Wonder what the scam is?

and yes he’s selling other desirable vehicles at silly prices.

He probably doesn't even have the car, he'll just take a deposit and vanish.

Just happened to my dad - advertised his car for sale on AutoTrader and one of the first calls within a day or two and the guy was asking why it was half the price on eBay - someone had copied the pictures and ad text to eBay and listed it for half the price.

Fab thank you! Exactly what I was looking for.

PTV wise I was quite shocked that the standard cars don't have an LSD, but they still seem to drive great regardless so not too fussy over that!

I'd probably look to get a CarPlay headunit down the line as I'm not a huge fan of the aux idea given that it doesn't let you skip songs unless you either use your phone or press a bluetooth adapter!

Do you know if BiXenon is tied into PDLS? I see a lot of cars seem to have PDLS listed.

You're right, I saw the real owner post that in the Cayman club on facebook asking what was going on haha. I can't see anyone stupid enough to put a deposit on a car that cheap compared to market prices.

I had a 2015 CS and it was a fantastic car for spirited driving. You really need to drive one to make a decision on manual/PDK. I think the manual box in the 981 is excellent in use, however the gearing is quite long and I’m lazy so went with PDK.

Options, I feel can make or break the overall 981 experience. Basically everything was an option on the 981. Much of this will come down to personal preference, but it’s better to drive some cars and have an opinion. Retrofitting options is possible, but largely overly expensive. Best to get the right car and options from the start.

Some of the options I had:

Seats - I had the Sports seats and they were good, but would have preferred the electric multi-way Sport plus versions. You can have buckets here too, but they can be a pain if it’s your daily driver. Note - you need the optional air bag switch if you ever want to fit a child’s car seat.

Suspension - I had the passive setup which is firm but well controlled, however I would have preferred PASM for aesthetics (its 10mm lower). Sports Suspension was another option, but it’s another 10mm lower again and too firm for poor roads.

Audio - All options are rather compromised in the 981, but I thought Sound package plus was reasonable and should be the minimum choice. Bose rather spoilt the bass for me and I never experienced the Burmeister option. Mine also had Universal Audio which I think provided the usb connection for use with MP3s and memory sticks. No apple car play here!

PCM Nav - Quite dated to use but nice to have.

Wheels - I had the forged 20” Turbo alloys and they looked great. Some other designs (non forged) were more popular though.

Heated Seats - Definitely, for obv reasons.

Heated Steering wheel - I liked this, but I don’t think it was available on the Sports Design wheel which is the one you’d want.

Steering wheel - the multifunction wheel is handy (see above), but has horrible rocker buttons for changing gear.

PSE - Sounds great but many people say it drones at motorways speeds. Standard dual exhaust is still quite nice and sounds good, certainly doesn’t drone. Try before you buy. You can always fit PSE later on.

Park Assist Front and Rear - for visibility I felt this was the minimum you’d want, though the optional camera would have been a nice to have, especially if you were used to it previously.

Dimming and Folding Mirrors - nice to have.

Cruise - never used it.

Mobile Phone prep - yup, another option.

Rear wiper - divides opinion, but handy for reversing in the rain.

When I decided to change I thought of going 718 and getting my ideal spec - GTS with alcantara spec interior, with most of the options above but this time with PASM. In the end I decided it was simpler getting a car where all that stuff was just standard. Still great cars though.

Thank you very much, good detailed write up.

Options wise I think you're right, it'll be much cheaper and easier to get a car with options already specced so will be holding out for this. I plan on touring France so would quite like cruise in mine, annoying that some of them don't have it specced after looking at retrofit costs sitting at £400!

Definitely want PSE, my current car has an aftermarket exhaust and drones a little so I'd say I'm used to drone :)

Great cars, gearing is frustratingly long but that’s the only quibble really. I’ve tried to buy both a 987 Boxster and and a 981 Cayman in the past but gave up both times as they’re just impossible to find with the right options, let alone if you want a colour that’s not monochrome.

I wouldn’t completely discount the 718 until you try one, the torque really improves the car and IMO the proper flat 6 wail isn’t really present in the 981 anyway - not the same as a 911 anyway.

About as balanced as a car gets the Cayman. Not as much of an event as a 911, but cracking cars and a good step up from a GT86.

I've had a go in a few 981 cayman/boxsrrrs, nice cars, but the brakes are very over served compared to older cars. When I was a member of the owners club I had a go in one (having driven to the dealership in my older 996 turbo), the first time I braked I almost went through the windscreen:p. PSE sounds awesome though, even in a none accurate car, pdk makes the car feel much faster then it is, and supposedly you won't ever need to change the clutch. Oh and as above, have a look on porsche website to see how many options there are:D.

Overall a great all round car that always puts a smile on my face. Have the CS in auto as I use it as a daily and have those lazy days.
The amount of options is definitely a pain trying to find the perfect one. Think it took me 2 months to find close to the right one for the right money and low miles and had to get the PSE retrofitted.

PSE - Most important for me, the pops and crackles are what it's all about! Neighbours may not agree with me at 6am in an echoing drive though.
Chrono - A nice extra if you track, the normal sport mode may be enough for regular roads. Wouldn't have been a deal breaker for me.
PASM - Never tried a model without but the lower stance over the 20" look nice.

Park assist and folding + dimming mirrors are great helpers as you would expect. I don't have a rear windscreen wiper all though it looks good without its pretty horrible reversing in bad weather.

Only extra I wish I had is the extended leather interior as it just looks that bit more special

Those who know the porsche brand a bit better, can you negotiatiate with a dealer?

Looking at a cayman 718 and wondered if there was a target level of discount to aim for?

I've a spec in mind, which took ages to finalise on

I'd be kicking myself if I bought one only to find out I could have saved a few grand

I had a similar question. It was an independant Porsche specialist rather than OPC, however they would not budge at all and then sold the car before I could get my hands on it..

Are you buying new or used?

New

I already knew haggling on a used car is pointless. Had it myself no end of times.

You'd think it was the other way around, but these days I've always been able to get heavy discounts on new (albeit this will be my first porsche).

BMW and Audi move significantly on price. I managed 20% from BMW when buying my M140i. Obviously not looking for that from porsche, but just wondered if anyone knew a rough guide? I did watch a youtube video where someone mentioned 6% but that was in the USA
