Easiest option is to get an Android head unit for it. It replaces the original BMW screen and you will still retain the original BMW head unit, UI and all OEM functionality. I’ve got one in my F30 and you just hold the menu button to toggle between BMW and Android menu so there’s literally no downside. With one of these fitted you can then do wired or wireless CarPlay and Android Auto amongst other things.

Another option is an MMI CarPlay box. These are just boxes that sit in between the video feed from head unit and display and you can switch between BMW UI and CarPlay mode.

You could also retrofit an NBT Evo head unit but that gets expensive. Easily £800+ and it’s not simple plug and play either.

If CarPlay is all you need then I’d check out the MMI boxes. It’ll be the cheapest option. Just make sure you get a one that suits your kind of screen - for that era if it’s the large pro nav it will be NBT.
