What controls do you use..I can't help you with KB/M but....

The cobra is one of the fastest in engineered ships in the game remember running is always an option.

To get you feet wet again do some data delivery and.maybe small commodity delivery missions.

If anyone tried to interdict you you have 2 options ... Throttle down then run, or try to win the interdiction .. i would try to win myself as.it isn't hard imo unless it's a player (and if it'd a player you are.stuffed).

Don't forget to keep your throttle in the blue to keep your ship most manouverable and also o would bind the FA off button easily to reach. FA off will make your ship much faster to flip....

Cobra is a good learner ship with cheap repairs and insurance. It can do a bit of every thing so I would say learn your trade in that ship... Just get it nice and A rated.

Thanks for the help.

I'm using a Xbox controller, but I am tempted to pick up a cheap HOTAS.
I did the same and got a used hotas x for cheap and have not looked back (700+ hours). 2.6m is not much when you start upgrading the various parts. Trading missions are probably easiest and will get you rep. Stick to one system so your rep/influence will go up and you will start getting higher valued missions. But you will need an out of game tool (eddb) to ensure that you can find the trading materials required without going out too far. If you are playing in open, I would suggest going into solo or group play. It essentially removes the threat of other players.

Finally, after weeks of stalking webstores, I have an x52 Pro arriving on Tuesday to relieve my very well worn tflight x.

I had a T-Flight but didn't really like the feel of it so sold it and switched back to my Xbox controller.

How did you find the x52 compared to the T-Flight?

I love it, and only have one minor niggle.

Feels far more high quality, lots more buttons has made life a lot easier. More travel on the stick has made it a lot easier to fly FA off and aiming with fixed weapons.

The niggle is that there is quite a lot of slop in the centre of the stick. I also removed the throttle detents on the 20/80% marks which took like 5 mins. Not having a detent in the middle makes landing a little harder, but that doesn't bother me anymore.

On the whole, definitely a vast improvement over the t flight.

I had great hopes for ED when it first came out and played it a lot, I liked the look and the sound of the game as well as the "flight" and combat models, hardly realistic but fun to fight. However over the years its development has left me more and more disappointed to the point I no longer play it.

The missions are one dimensional and generic; take this there or go here and kill x number of ships etc. They could have done them so much better, maybe had some escort missions or stealth missions or anything requiring you to make some sort of interesting decision. There was a training mission in the game where you had to sneak around a system without being seen, that was interesting to do but nothing like that ever made it into the game. The money made from the missions has been increasingly made worthless as there are now so many easy ways to make all the cash you could ever want for ships and weapons. Trading is uninteresting too, its all done via third party websites not through anticipating opportunities through information given in the game itself.

I think Odyssey is more of the same, added because Star Citizen has an FPS element so ED must have it too. Most ED players want to fly a space ship though, not walk around. So instead of copying that feature why not develop the game so ships can land on planets with an atmosphere? I suspect the people who make these decisions are out of touch with their player base, they listen to focus groups and sit on committees and study the competition and so the game just gets broader and broader but never any deeper.

Those have kind of been my feelings about the game. I'm kind of concerned they're venturing into FPS as there are so many other games in the genre out there to cater for everyone. I worry they might be speading themselves too thin. I agree that I'd far prefer they spent their time focussing on improving the mission structure and randomised events more complex and involving as much of it feels like standard MMO fetch quests at this point.

I don't mind the idea of being able to get out of the ships and walk about planets or space stations but I'm not sure anyone playing elite will be interested in seeing it turned into an FPS. To me Elite was always about the procedurarally generated events and flying a spaceship through the galaxy. I'd rather the focussed their resources on that than branching off into an entirely different genre.

I'll probably still buy the expansion anyway though. I'm keen to see what they're up to as I haven't played it much since the last expansion. Despite my grumbles about it being a bit shallow I do like the game as it's quite unique in the space trading/combat/galaxy travelling MMO experience it offers.

Cool, I might have a look for one in a few months time when stock catches up. I guess I can't complain too much about the T-Flight given it's only a £30-40 joystick/throttle but it did feel quite cheap and plasticky.

I've been enjoying thargoid combat. It's definitely challenging and gives me that "oh dude I'm going to lose my ship" action that made me love the game initially.

As someone who bought into Elite Dangerous back in Premium Beta I dont have to worry about paying for Odyssey but im not sure I like the look of it.

For the last however many years its a game i go through phases with.

  • Played tons in Beta but put if down very quickly on release (before wings came out) as just felt id done what I wanted.
  • Picked it up very briefly when horizons came out but couldnt get into it.
  • Tried it again when i got my Rift S and loved it but quickly moved away.
  • Picked it up again when Covid first came around and hammered it unlocking all engineers in the bubble and all the guardian tech i wanted but hit the wall at ranger in exploration and dangerous in combat and drifted away again.
  • After watching odyssey trailers started playing again in smaller doses unlocked my corvette from burning stations (was half way there doing mail jobs before it come on) and slowly grinding out engineering mats and cash to build my corvette up.
The thing I've learnt you've got to set your own goals and try not to make them too far, I could do combat elite but it would suck all the fun out of the game and be night after night and compromised nav beacons or what ever, it will come slowly but surely it will come.

One of the things i am most interested in is VR switching in Odyssey, I use VR when im doing combat missions or sometimes mining but for other things i want to be able to have TV on or other stuff so VR locks me in to much, being able to switch on the fly i really like the sound of.

Also maybe someone on my friends list will actually start playing again, my list doesn't have a player who has fired up the game within the last 3 years, Space can be very lonely, and that could be an issue in Odyssey looking at the gameplay they have shown.

Yeah I completely agree. Sometimes you gotta stop grinding towards some random goal and just actually play the game. I'm out squashing bugs in asterope because I felt like it. My plan is to get enough cash to outfit my cutter for bug squashing and get a second type 9 for cargo. I could start working on that by stacking massacre missions or laser mining, but I am having fun now and it pays okay, so why stop? Sometimes you gotta stop trying to beat the grind.

I am also looking for wing mates, but specifically for AX combat. My mates aren't quite there yet and have some decent PVE ships, but nothing engineered for AX. I can reliably kill a Cyclops, but Basilisks etc are way tooo fast for my AX anaconda, and I'm not bothered with fully speccing out my Krait 2 because the jump range goes to crap when you drop out the FSD booster for HRPs etc. So I thought I could do with someone to help me kill them faster while I tank.

LOL at Yamiks throwing his toys out if the pram for not being given a free Alpha key. I mean what did he expect, he posts nothing but profane negative nitpicking clickbait garbage which no one could honestly say was any kind of constructive criticism, and not just his chosen way of racking up subs who seem to like that juvenile style. I mean I know Odyssey is very likely going to be a half baked shell of a dlc, at least initially, kinda don't need Yamiks to tell me that, but Yamiks has no but himself to blame for being locked out. You just know he would just go after the clicks and be as negative as possible without any semblance of being constructive. I just don't see the appeal of the guy to be honest.

Yep, he's as bad as OA for different reasons lol, I don't watch either of them if I can help it lol. I'll have access myself this time next week so will happily answer any questions people have and stream some too for giggles at all the things.

Hah, they're refused to give Yamiks an alpha key, gut feeling is this is going to blow big time as expected.

Frankly I don't care how popular a youtuber is, positive OR negative I think the level of entitlement shown by throwing toys out of pram because not given a freebie is discusting..they should buy it like the rest of us.

Besides.,... Personally I take much more stock out of the opinions of someone who put their money where their mouth was and paid for it anyway... Also value people's opinions more if I know they are not looking for clicks.
TLDR I would trust the views from random experienced.elite (or any game) players on a forum like this than any youtuber.
Possibly somewhat contradictory

That is not knocking them either. I have met Kerrash personally a couple of times and is a totally decent bloke , also I do trust some of his views to a point as it happens because i knew his opinion about the game before he became a popular streamer. I say to a point.... He is way more forgiving than I am, this is probably in part because of his relationship with frontier but I genuinely think it is mostly because he is such a nice guy and tends to see the positives in everything and skim past the negatives.

I also think I met OA once. Whilst I often as not don't agree with his views he seems a genuine sort and wish him well. He just wants ED to be a different game than I do

OTOH yamiks I sometimes agree with his underlying point but he spins it in such an OTT irritating way that I just can't listen to him.
I guess his content is not for the likes of me.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of it as I've never really followed Yamiks content though it does seem a bit strange that they haven't given what appears to be the second largest ED content creator out there a key?

Though some of his recent videos have been quite critical so maybe he's annoyed Frontier with his comments and the 'edgy' content in his videos?

Would be keen to hear your thoughts! I'll probbaby buy the Alpha copy of the game as well since I often dip into it occassionaly so want to have the expansion content available. It's only an extra tenner on top of the regular cost anyway to get access what appears to be serveral months earlier than release.

I find OA dull as dishwater tbh, Yamiks is quite funny. But then I take zero opinion from anything on youtube regarding a computer game. Their opinion is no better than mine at the end of the day.

I like OA for information, but Hawkes is a nice blend of informative and amusing, even if he's a bit too positive at times. Yammiks, well he's not everyone's cup of tea but I can see why some people find him entertaining.

Yamiks is very shock and awe and unfiltered, his criticism while is some cases vaild comes of as bitching where as a lot of his peers on YouTube come across more thoughtful and tempered.
His stuff is funny but him an Pilot like to make 30min videos bitching about things (like fleet carriers, which I almost 100% agree with his video about).

If i was FD i can see why if they have limited keys to hand out (apparently steam policy limits them to 1000 keys), Yamiks would be further down this list.

If you can have obsidian ant doing the Attenborough of elite bit or the crazy latvian going off on one which one would you pick as a publisher?

Elite as some great youtubers someone wasnt going to make the cut.

Yamiks apparently been telt in no uncertain terms what FDev think of him. Yamiks takes it bad, according to the screenshot the emails between them I just saw in The Pilots stream. Pilot wisely staying out of it from that point. Wouldn't be surprised there is another vid from Yamiks soon.
