I use Linux so don't have quite the same experience with AV products. As someone who used to use Nod32 before I switched to Linux, I did carry on installing their Linux variant until I realised they were only offering 'limited support' and had no plans for future updates. I installed Clam-AV for a while until I saw pretty much the entire Linux community say don't use it as it has a tendency to cause way too many false-positives.

I do occasionally run a couple of Windows VMs if I can't get specific apps working on Linux, but just rely on Windows Defender for that as I'm not willing to pay for additional software for a product I rarely use.

Windows defender is more than capable so no need for AV these days IMO.

Well as long as you are not visiting dodgy websites and downloading god knows what :D

This seems like a relevant thread.

I'm considering going with Avast Ulitmate (multi user) to cover the families devices. I currently have Windows Defender enables and use Avast free antivirus. Yje Anti-virus is picking up and quaratining the odd attachement in my junk mail as my email adress must be on a few lists given I've had it for 20 odd years.

The VPN appeals and some of the other features regarding clean up and anti-tracking also sound worthwhile. I was never especially techy and have less time to remain any level of competence these days with more going on.

I just wondered how people felt about Avast.

Not used AV since Windows 10 came out - not had a single issue.

Common sense is all that's needed, be wary of where you go, and what you click on.
Windows 10 has Windows Defender built in, unless you specifically disabled it then you've been using it without knowing. I would recommend disabling it even if you don't run alternative antivirus software since it's essentially malware itself now.

Yeah, defender for me..never had a virus etc.. in a matter of years!
When was the last time you remember Defender stopping a legitimate threat? With common sense most people won't have had a virus for several years with no antivirus, so "never had a virus" isn't a good way to judge it. Many tests show it does a poor job compared to most third party antivirus, and it has a ridiculously high false positive rate, sometimes even deliberately mislabeling safe software it doesn't like such as qBittorrent.

MS (not just MS) are slowly inching towards control of the desktop environment - people will lack the vision to see where it is going and think people are making a fuss about nothing, not immediately be affected by it so don't think it is a problem or see it as a conspiracy theory. Control what software can run on a system, which requires hardware DRM, require signed software to be able to communicate over the internet and then you control the internet. And we all lose out ultimately.

Hence the push for things like normalising acceptance of TPM requirements, stuff being pushed through under the guise of combatting child porn, etc. etc.

I use Comodo because I have for years, it's great, and they provide enough for free - firewall, antivirus, sandboxing etc. The downside is that it can be very pessimistic. I didn't hours wondering why my Minecraft server wasn't working - Comodo was sandboxing the Java VM

I've been using bitdefender Free anyone know of anything better? some have suggested Avira and avast
I went back to avast for a bit but got annoyed within a day and switched back.
Avira ive not tried in years and AVG I assume will be the same as avast

I'm also using Malwarebytes is it worth upgrading to malwarebytes premium?
