The current obsession with popping exhausts

I guess I've been spoilt over the years, as that sounds awful to me. Obviously the X3 popping is a joke, although does make me laugh. But I really don't like the sound of that e46 and never have. I have owned e36 M3s and did like the sound of those. But in all honesty my favourite sounding cars I've owned have been my mk1 Ford Escort 1.7 crossflow with twin 40s, followed closely by my old 3.0S Capri. I guess it's horses for courses.

Carbs vs injectors would be my guess for the sound on those beasties!

My Z4 35i used to pop a bit on overrun. My M3 does not.

I don't mind a bit of popping when it is natural and a bit subtle - it sounds crap when it is loud or has been clearly deliberately mapped to do it.

Pah, that's nothing!

That's on the quickshifter though not overrun.
Taken all the fuel out now as it was like a gunshot every gear change.

It's the atmospheric BOV that will be causing that. When the BOV vents to atmosphere, it is releasing air that has already been metered by the MAF, and the ECU will have fuelled accordingly as the stock ECU was set up with a recirculating system in mind. Most of that air never makes it to the cylinders so you get a momentary super rich condition causing the "gunshot" sound as all that unburnt fuel goes into the hot turbo / exhaust system.

Yeah, it all stopped pretty much when I took that off. Fitted a CAIS instead so had a lovely flutter noise which was much nicer.

Was driving through town today and let off and the lambo did the biggest bang its done to date, narrow high street, tall buildings. Sounded like a 12 gauge going off :D

My Megane loves to bang but it caught me unaware a few weeks ago in similar circumstances. Gave it a load of boot in sport mode and shifted just as it came on full boost. Genuinely thought I'd broke it I've never heard anything bang as loud, people turned around from as far as I could see

My R34GTT Skyline (RWD version) popped and banged like a good 'un, then I fitted a different aftermarket ECU which had spark cut rather than fuel cut for the limiter and had a 1% injector duty at overrun rather than the usual full fuel cut and it became hilarious but far too attention grabbing around town.

After I had a RB26 engine from a GTR fitted and changed the ECU again it could spit 6ft (distance) by 4ft round fire balls once it got hot enough with just a small tweaking of the fuel tables in the ECU (took about 10 secs to adjust or reset) -

As I've got much, much older however and, with the prevalence of "hot Hatches" popping and farting everywhere, the idea of my own car doing the same type of noise (can be added to my map if req'd) just makes me shudder now.

Popping exhausts, or unnecessarily loud cars just sound silly. I was in Paignton (Devon) the other day, loads of tourists around all over the place, so if you're in a car it was a take your time situation, but there was a pillock in a kitted out Focus ST with an obscene exhaust driving around in first gear popping the exhaust note as much as he could, just driving around doing constant laps of the town centre (not speeding above 30mph, but constant 0-30mph runs everywhere he could, as fast as he could), must have seen him go past about 5 times.

I like performance cars but when I see people as per the above it just irritates me, especially when it's in a really busy built up area and you are walking around with two young kids in tow, and there is some idiot thinking he/she is on some kind of car show parade generating obscene decibel levels while everyone else is just trying to enjoy the local area. Suppose though at least you can hear them coming if you're going to try and cross the road lol.

I know what you mean.

There is a car behind my house. The guy just seems unable to drive correctly, just revs constantly to get his exhaust to pop.
He drives past my house at 5mph. Going vroom pop pop pop vroom pop pop pop.

He even starts the car in the morning, revs it a dozen times, then just turns it off and goes back into his house.

Very odd fellow

We have a few of those out this way. I fail to see why this isn't regulated on noise grounds. Some of them are ridiculously loud and there is a group who like going out in the small hours. It's not really appropriate and given its unnecessary why it isn't just banned due to nuisance factor I don't know. They seem able to ban everything else, like driving at sensible speed. 20mph blanket limits all over the show round here. Which makes the noise even more farcical.

Technically it isnt legal already and you can be fined, but no one enforces it.

If the locals keep complaining eventually they do something about it though.
