There are interactive elements which work like a form sort of.

You can disable this behaviour using about:config on Firefox but it can be handy if you are using sites with extensive forms to fill in, etc.

have seen this on some sites, typically with chrome+ublockO, usually defeat it by click&hold back button to jump back in history before that site,
which also gets you out of other Hotel California sites.

All the dodgy tactics found on the web, pop-ups, pop-unders, chain redirects, pretty much all of it was invented by the porn industry

I'm reliably informed these kind of techniques are still widely in use, esp on the aggregator sites. But I wouldn't know anything about it. All I know is that it's fun to browse with Javascript disabled, under Linux, in a VM. No reason...
