On the same date, FM radio licences expire. From that date onwards, radio programmes will no longer be broadcast via FM. With the return to the original switch-off date, consumers have more time to switch technology.

The radio industry is aware that there is no future for FM after 2024."

Here's a synopsis of the real story. It's taken from the text of the link above should anyone care to check



In 2014, Swiss radio broadcasters agreed to stop broadcasting on FM by 2024 at the latest. At the end of 2020, almost three quarters of radio listening was digital, and the radio industry decided to do an earlier shutdown than originally planned. The new date was August 2022 for state-run FM and January 2023 for the privately operated stations.

However, they've been forced to do a U-turn.

In the past few weeks, Switzerland has held a public debate on FM switch off. In the German-speaking and Italian speaking regions of Switzerland, the vast majority of radio broadcasters remain in favour of the early shutdown of VHF, however not in French-speaking Switzerland. Since a nationwide solution is needed, radio broadcasters have therefore returned to their original plan of switching off the FM stations by 31 December 2024.

In addition, the latest market figures indicate that listeners need more time for the switchover. By reverting to the original date for FM switch off, consumers, including those driving a car, will have more time to switch technology. Since 2020 almost 100 percent of new vehicles are supplied with DAB+ as standard, in line with EU legislation. There is a particular need for retrofitting in older cars that do not have any reception options via DAB+ or other digital channels. DAB+ retrofit receivers are available on the market at various price points.

The radio industry is aware that there is no future for FM after 2024. The existing FM licences will expire at the end of 2024, and beyond that point, FM radio can no longer be broadcast in Switzerland.

My interpretation is that this is a broadcaster-led change rather than being consumer driven. The Swiss broadcasters and possibly the Government have colluded to create a false deadline by refusing to renew the FM broadcast licences In effect, they've engineered a situation where it's Hobson's choice. The reality that there's still a demand for FM has been broaught home by the voices of the French-speaking Swiss. The loss of FM, particularly in-car FM is something that continues to be a problem. However, the greed in pursuing an all-digital-radio future means that those in power are steamrollering over the concerns of the general public.

If I were in power, I would switch FM off immediately.
There is no point in the slow death, just do it as soon as possible.

A similar question - When are you going fully electric?

If I was in power in the UK I would do something more positive for consumer's benefit rather than the media moguls.

I would mandate minimum quality standards in DAB and DAB+ broadcasting to give listeners a genuine reason to switch.

The situation right now is akin to the British Enclosure Act where land barons stole common ground by corruptly using the power of Government and cronyism.

I'm really not sure why any of us even bother to post at all in this thread. The guy is a complete idiot that knows next to nothing about music or it's reproduction. Obviously knows nothing at all about UK radio broadcasting, although he should because he's been told enough times in this thread.
Can i make a suggestion......................let's just close this thread simply by not posting any replies to anything 4K8KW10 posts in this thread. In 10 years time it will then end up being 60 pages of the last 36 pages of 4K8KW10 just posting to himself.
This will be my last post in this thread, that's for shure.

Not worried in the slightest.

Hybrid cars getting obsolete ... that's a new one. :p. I don't plan on buying a new car just to get DAB, this one is staying for years. My FM only mid-range home cinema receiver is only three years old, and the clock radio I bought from Amazon is about 2 months old. It was £20 for an FM one, or £85 for the DAB version. I'm not paying 340% of the cost to get terrible sound quality from something I'll use sparingly. If they can sell them at the same cost it might have a future, but they can't.

I've no interest in commercial radio that barely sounds better than AM given the terrible bitrates via DAB. FM works just fine, it's power efficient and doesn't require a computer to decode it.

Anyway, I look forward to next delusional installment of "how to dig a deeper hole" from someone who doesn't understand the UK!
