The problem with static is that you don't just necessarily blow things up, you can just damage them, and so shorten their lifespan. The worst part is you may never know you have shortened the lifespan of your £1000 graphics card!! It's always worth using anti-static precautions. You don't have to go completely over the top, but wearing a wrist strap and being careful what you touch ( handle motherboards by their edges, avoid touching the PCIe contacts on a graphic card, don't touch the gold contacts on RAM and so on.. ). Just don't listen to the people who don't use any precautions. It's not worth risking thousands of pounds of gear for the sake of purchasing and wearing a £5 wrist strap, and taking a little care on how you handle stuff.
