We are looking for a full-time webdesigner. The ideal candidate will have excellent HTML, php and javascript knowledge together with a high degree of graphical flair.

Willing to pay for the right person although unsure what the market rate is for this position. Some input on salary would be appreciated from forum members.

If you think you fit the bill please register your interest in this thread and we'll be in touch via your registered forums e-mail address.

For a salaried web-designer, assuming you're not looking for a senior developer, the London-weighted salary would typically be around 18-25k depending on experience. But I would be expecting a candidate to additionally have a very strong grasp of CSS, accessibility and some database experience in addition to the skillset you're after.

I'd argue that for HTML, CSS and a decent grasp of design and graphical editing you're looking at that figure. For professional-level PHP you'd be more likely looking at 25-30k in my experience.

Note: These are purely based on my own personal experience working at per-hour rates in these fields. Don't shout at me if you think I overcharged :)

It's usually pretty difficult to find a web designer and a web developer all in one, a friend runs a design company and they usually seperate the roles. I'd expect to pay someone a bit more than if they were just doing one of these roles.

Would you want the builder who builds your house, puts in your pluming etc to also do the interior decorating :)

Other alternative is to not use someone in house and get a company like www.optixsolutions.co.uk to do it for you, would probably be cheaper and you get the talents of x amount of people rather than 1.

By 'per-hour rates', are you quoting contract work? From what I've seen, that's the difference between working on contract vs. being a permanent employee. I don't consider your figure at all unreasonable for contract work, or for a permanent specialised position. But I do think it's a little too much to expect for a web-design position in an e-commerce setup :).

I agree, someone who can tackle all the programming and design a good site should be getting £30k+ easily.

Otherwise, you would have to split the task between a designer and programmer, as some webdesign firms tend to do and obviously you'd be paying more this way.

But it totally depends on the work really.

I agree contract work is going to be a much higher rate than a permanent position, this reflects lack of sick pay/pension/holiday and uncertainty of garaunteed work in the future.

Contract, yeah. Having said that, for that range of skills - PHP, SQL, e-commerce generally and all the design side etc. - I'd expect at least £30k, as relatively few people I've met have such a wide range of skills at a high level, even in permanent positions.

If I wasn't in a permanent position now I might be interested, though I'd be more comfortable specialising in the code and getting an outside agency in for the design, personally :)

The current website is a bit of a “Dinosaur” but it does its job very well and at the moment I don’t think there’s much point in changing it. I think some people (forum members) in the past have attempted to re-design it but no-one has produced a better design overall.

As someone once said "If it's not broken why fix it". Personally I see nothing wrong with how everything is and it works.

Can I just say one thing about this thread, obviously all IMHO ;)

Do NOT start posting designs in it. If you are serious about this role leave a message and then deal directly with whoever contacts you. Just because OcUK has a forum people shouldnt mean you should approach this any different, and less professionally to a standard job application. If you have any relevant work, it will be viewed in due course and at the right time.

My thoughts on salary if you are serious are around £22k. You will be able to find someone for that money who can do website deisgn, development and database work guaranteed.

hmm how about paying a web designer a one off fee to build the site and layout and then emplying a coder to maintain it?
There are really 2 jobs here - designer and programmer.

For one person who has a good portfolio and knowledge of both areas you are looking at >£30k IMO.

Afterall, I know programmers that get paid that and couldnt design you a decent looking site if their lives depending on it.
However, I could do a nice site, but dont know the first thing about SQL databases :)

Personally i think the site does slightly lag behind its competitors, and i posted a message in the forum changes section stating so a while ago.

My issue was that i was looking for a specific product (standalone ipod speakers), which when i looked on the OcUK front page i had no idea as to which category it would be placed in. A quick search resulted in only textual linkages, and since i only knew the device by looks i didn't want to go trawling through each one to see where it was. I checked the first 2 and gave up as other sites were much more user friendly.

If this is a "work from home 80% of the time" job i'd be very interested - but I cant relocate back "oop" north (did uni at stafford). But commuting once a week from south london would be fine.

Assuming the above i'd like to register my interest - can offer 4 years ISP experiance (Unix sysadmin and PHP developing).

Just a quick bit of advice for the OcUK guys: if you want to know the market rate then contact your local IT Recruitment Agency and see what they have to say.

I'd recommend pretending to be looking for a job like you have on offer rather than saying you're recruiting - unless you want said agency to be hassling you every other day!

Right, this thread has now been cleaned. As requested in the original post by Spie, this thread is for those who wish to apply for the position to state their interest, or to discuss the requirements of the position, such as salary, etc.

This thread is not to be used for posting proposed designs, discussion of said designs, moaning, insulting each other, or anything else. Any discussion concerning proposed designs should be taken up directly with OcUK, and not posted on the forum.

Any repeat of the events that happened today in this thread will result in at least temporary removal of the offenders' ability to post in this forum. This is your one and only warning.
