Off to Virgin tomorrow to spend Christmas vouchers and I am asking myself which albums should I buy. I say, why think for myself when there are so many people on the forum who'd do the dirty work of thinking for me...

So - suggest a few albums, regardless of era that are simply MUST BUYs i.e. express a musical, songwriting

So far on the list...

Sujifyan Stephens (Sp?)- Illinoise
John Mayer - Heavier Things

Neil Young - Harvest

Nice pick, though I wouldn't consider it his best work. Strangely though I picked it up the other day along with Doolittle.

Not quite sure what music you're looking at but these are pretty 'essential':

Velvet Underground - Underground & Nico / Loaded
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 / Blood On The Tracks / Blonde On Blonde...
Love - Forever Changes
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

As for 'indie'/'alternative':

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Slint - Spiderland
Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted
Violent Femmes - Self Titled
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
Arcade Fire - Funeral

Oh, and Paul Simon - Graceland

My Top Ten Most Essential Albums Ever, Without Which Your Record Collection Will Never Be Complete*:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (rock)
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (prog rock)
Bob Dylan - Bring It All Back Home (singer-songwriter/folk)
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison (country)
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters (jazz)
The Beatles - Revolver (rock)
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs(singer-songwriter/tin pan alley/weird/awesome songs)
Radiohead - The Bends (rock)
Nick Drake - Pink Moon (singer-songwriter/acoustic)
Sigur Rós - Agaetis Byrjun (instrumental/post-rock/space rock/Icelandic/awesome)

None of those are particularly leftfield. If you want some more modern, 'indie' suggestions:

The Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
Aesop Rock - Labor Days
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Buck 65 - Square
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering

*Completely off the top of my head, so not actually guaranteed to be the top ten most essential albums in any way whatsoever. They are all awesome though.
