PREPARE YOUR SYSTEM

Its not uncommon these days to require a good quality PSU (Power Supply Unit) . To achieve maximum compatability it is recommended to have atleast a quality 350+ Watt PSU.

My personal findings show that the Enermax 350w+, Antec TrueBlue 480w, Hiper Type R 580w all work without problems on anything less than an X1800XT . For an X1800XT or X1900XT(X) GPU i would recommend a minimum of 580w

For Crossfire systems, refer to THIS link for compatable PSU's

If you are unsure which PSU to use, or you are experiancing Cold Boot Issues, check out THIS THREAD

BIOS Settings

As with all modern day graphics cards , there are certain Bios functions that are not required by the Radeon. For a guide i will list the basic setting you may require.

PCI EX Frequency : DEFAULT 100 (105 reported optimal)
Fast Gate A20 Option : Enabled
Video BIOS shadowing : Disabled
Video BIOS cacheable : Disabled
xxxxxx - xxxxxx shadow : All Disabled
IDE prefetch mode : Enabled
Init Display First : AGP or PCIex
Assign IRQ for VGA : Enabled
PCI/VGA palette snoop : Disabled
PNP O/S installed : YES or AUTO
AGP Aperture size : 64 or 128 recommended by ATI
Video ram cacheable : Disabled
System bios cacheable : Disabled
Fast Writes : Refer to ATI SMARTGART FAQ's below
AGP Transfer rate : 8x / 4x (If supported, otherwise 2X)

UN-INSTALLING YOUR PREVIOUS DRIVERS

If you are upgrading your current drivers, to the latest version, It is advisable that you remove the old drivers completely from your system to avoid any conflicts or issues.

Simply removing the Drivers from the ADD/REMOVE options in Windows ,isnt as effective as following the guides listed in the links below.

A program dedicated to removing ATI drivers from your system, is now available from Guru3D.

Rather than using the Manual method, this program will do all the work for you, and should give you a complete removal of your old drivers.

I have tested this program sucessfully, but would advise any first time users to read the 'Read-Me' enclosed within the program before using the utility.

Driver Sweeper 2 or grab the latest release from the authors website Version 3.0

ATI introduced a new simple application that removes the CATALYST™ software from the system.

CATALYST™ Uninstaller

There is also a very informative guide made by Genius over at Driver Heaven, for manual removal of the drivers. HERE

*Please note that manually editing your Registry can cause damage to your system , If your not 100% sure what to do, then ask somebody who is*

Not only do you need display drivers for an AGP graphics card, you also need drivers for your motherboard which enable AGP functionality for the motherboard chipset.

These drivers may be referred to using any of the following names:

* AGP Driver
* AGP Miniport
* AGP VXD Driver
* Chipset Driver
* GART Driver
* VGART

Often you will see the name of a motherboard chipset in connection with these terms. For example:

* ALi GART Driver
* AMD AGP Miniport
* Intel VGART
* VIA AGP Driver
* NV AGP

& Overview

Unofficial CCC FAQ

Re-enabling the old control panel after installing the CATALYST Control Center:

As long as the control panel and the CATALYST Control Center are both installed, just un-install the CATALYST Control Center and reboot your system to get the old ATI control panel back.

Catalyst AI

The basic idea behind Catalyst AI is that it gives the end user the option to completely disable the optimizations in ATI's driver should they feel its necessary.

For a comprehensive view on Catalyst AI ,take a look Here

OpenGL Version 2.0 Support

The CATALYST™ Software Suite introduces OpenGL Version 2.0 support. This version of OpenGL will be in line with the latest GL ARB approved specifications. New to this specification are GLSL, non-power-of-two-textures, separate stencil, multiple render targets, and point sprites.

TWEAKING AND TROUBLE-SHOOTING

With the instalation of your new drivers. The system should be allowed to re-boot. Smartgart will test your system for compatability when you restart.

SMARTGART Ensures system stability by automatically performing a variety of bus tests, that determine your optimal graphics accelerator settings.

The screen will flicker , or flash on and off for a few seconds after re-booting from installing the drivers, which is perfectly normal.

If you want to check out Smartgarts settings :

At the RUN command, type in the following entry:- atiprbxx.exe /g

The following screen should appear :

smartg2.jpg

All the settings should be set to ON for optimal performance.

Please Note : Changing these settings could result in system instability.

This feature is also present in the Advanced properties of the Control panel.

smart3.jpg

If you note the 'Set AGP Speed' This reports which level of AGP your card is detected to run.

This can be adjusted using the Slider Bar if you think the reported Speed is incorrect, or you wish to lower the settings for compatability.

SMARTGART Uninstaller

ATI's FAQ on SMARTGART

Q1: Does SMARTGART disable all AGP support including AGP reads, AGP writes, and AGP fast writes)?
A1: No. SMARTGART tests the functionality of each AGP command and determines if your system is capable of supporting each one, and will only enable it if system stability is maintained. Please note that SMARTGART does not disable or turn off AGP support in your actual hardware; SMARTGART only ensures that the ATI CATALYST driver will not use an AGP function that has been deemed to be unstable.

Q2: Can I disable SMARTGART?
A2: SMARTGART cannot be disabled, but it can be removed from your system. Please note that SMARTGART will only be installed if the ATI setup program is used to install the display driver. To remove SMARTGART, use the Windows->Control Panel->Add or Remove option to uninstall the ATI CATALYST display driver. When the system is restarted the operating system will inform you that "New Hardware" has been detected. Locate the directory where the driver is located and complete the driver installation. The ATI driver will now be installed without SMARTGART.

Q3: Are ATI’s products capable of supporting fast writes?
A3: Yes. The RADEON 9700 PRO, RADEON 9700, RADEON 9500 PRO, RADEON 9500, RADEON 9000 PRO, RADEON 9000 and the RADEON 8500 are capable of supporting fast writes when using an ATI CATALYST based display driver. Of course fast writes must also be supported on the motherboard you are using and be enabled in the system BIOS. In order for fast writes to be used by ATI’s driver, fast writes must also pass the SMARTGART diagnostics test. ATI products previous to the RADEON 8500 as well as the RADEON 8500 DV are not capable of supporting fast writes.

There was a table composed quite awhile ago on a site I can't mention because they have adverts.....but my forum snatched it and we've been updating it frequently. The list is not perfect but we've been doing the best we could, and keep in mind these are all supposed to be compared stock vs stock at average resolutions.

I thought it best to post this in a new topic, so that it is not lost inside the big thread. For those interested in the discussion, please go here:-

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18199788

Post #277 by KNiVES explains this process, however, it is not very clear as it is taken from a German translation, so here is a tidy version. :) All credit to those who discovered this, I do not want to take any for this. :)

MLAA on 4870 GPU

I have installed the 10.10c hotfix drivers and I run Win7 64-bit with a 4870 GPU.

1. Download the fixed package. - http://www.mediafire.com/?5h6cpooivo4sbox

2. Extract to a folder on your PC. (I use 7-Zip)

3. Extract Setup.exe. (Again, I use 7-Zip)

4. When I extracted Setup.exe, it did it in the same folder. So I then simply browsed to ...\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\B107032.

5. Take out "atiumdag.dl_" and place somewhere easy, say on your desktop.

6. Run a CMD prompt (as Admin). Do a change directory (CD) to your desktop location and enter, "expand atiumdag.dl_ atiumdag.dll"

7. You should now have "atiumdag.dll" on your desktop. Place this into C:\Windows\SYSWOW64. (Re-name the original file just in case).

-----
OK, so that's the file copy done. Now we need to alter a few settings in the Registry. I'd recommend taking a backup, just in case you want to revert back easily.

This is where it's slightly tricky. The original suggested Reg locations were different for me. It looks like they differ depending if you have a 4850 or a 4870. So these steps below are what worked for me.
-----

1. Open up Regedit.

2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000

3. Put in the following settings (you should have these entries already. I did not have one or two, so I simply added them as a NEW > String Value):-
"MLF_NA"="0"
"EnableUlps_NA"="0"
"SurfaceFormatReplacements_NA"="0"
"TFQ_NA"="0"
"TextureLod_NA"="0"
"DXVA_WMV_NA"="0"

4. Within the same location, expand out ...\0000 and drill down to UMD. (i.e. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\UMD)

5. Put in the following settings (again, most of these I had and most were set correctly):-
"MLF_DEF"="0"
"EnableUlps_DEF"="0"
"SurfaceFormatReplacements_DEF"="0"
"TFQ_DEF"="1"
"AntiAliasSamples_SET"= "0,2,4,8"
"AntiAlias_DEF"="1"
"AntiAliasSamples_DEF"="0"
"AntiAliasMapping_SET"="0(0:0,1:0) 2(0:2,1:2) 4(0:4,1:4) 8(0:8,1:8,2:16)"

6. Repeat the above two steps, but this time in a slightly different location. For me, I found this location by myself. The original instructions did not help me here. I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video and could not find the folder listed. BUT, if you simply expand the keys out (I had 5 sub-folders within ...\Video) you will find one that has all of the same options you saw previously. The other locations, have very little in them, so that's how I knew which to choose. So in the end, I settled on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{0307D824-4705-4DA4-AB1A-86192E5EC04C}.

7. You will have a ...\0000 folder and a ...\0001 folder. And again, simply apply the settings from step 3 in here.

8. Within each of them you have the ...\UMD folder. Again, apply the settings from step 5 in here.

======
For info... For those with a 4850 GPU, the original instructions listed these as the Reg location:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0005\UMD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{BD1512B5-6B3B-441F-B26B-DAC6BCA75AB0}\0000\UMD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{BD1512B5-6B3B-441F-B26B-DAC6BCA75AB0}\0001\UMD

As I say, these were no good for me.

======

-----
That's it! Reboot the PC and you should get....

e353c81b.jpg

-----

Now... off to test some games! :D

Thanks.

SOFT MOD FAQ

Thanks to techpowerup

Q: What kind of card do I have to buy?
A:

You will need a Radeon 9500 Non-pro (NP) or a Radeon 9800 SE. The pipelines can be unlocked on all PCB layouts.
For best performance it is recommended to get a PCB with 256-bit memory interface.
The layout of the memory chips determines the memory bus width of the card. L shaped layout means 256 bits, I shaped means 128 bits.
The memory bus width can not be changed - it is how many traces go to the memory chips.
ATI (falsely) advertises 9500's with L shaped memory (=256 bits) as 128 bits. They probably do this to make the difference between their products seem bigger. The same applies to the 9800SE series.

9500NP RED PCB L shaped memory 4 pipes 256bit Turns into 9700 NP

9500NP RED PCB I shaped memory 4 pipes 128bit Turns into 9500 PRO

9500NP BLACK PCB L shaped memory 4 pipes 256bit Turns into 9700 NP

9500NP BLACK PCB I shaped memory 4 pipes 128 bit Turns into 9500 PRO

9500NP 64MB 4 pipes 128 bit Turns into 9500 PRO

More on Softmodding:-

I have artifacts, how can i get rid of them?
A small percentage have been able to get rid of their artifacts. you can try:-

-Overclocking/underclocking your card
-Disabling HyperZ
-Disable Hierarchical-Z (Use google to find an utility called "RTool")
-Forcing Anti-Aliasing
-Forcing Anisotropic Filtering
-Forcing 16-Bit color

Whats the current success rate?
Many people can offer you an opinion on this, but the last time statistics were generated from this thread, the results were 65% softmodded successfully.

Ocfaq have a poll on their site based on 1941 votes which shows a success rate of 50%.

Statistics as of 16/01/04 built from the last set are very suprising. We saw a dropoff prior to the last statistics build of successfuls and that has changed.

Another 52 cards have been added to the running total of 119.
38 Successful
14 unsuccessful.

171 Cards total
116 Softmodded
55 Unsuccessful

Thats a 68% success rate!

Catalyst Control Center Unofficial FAQ

Thanks to Bratboy- R3D

Q) Can I just install this over old drivers
A) No, it can introduce many problems such as failure to react when you r-click on your monitor in display manager. Make sure to remove both drivers and old CP then install the new package.

Q) Do I have to use the new CCC or how do I get the old one?
A) No, the old control panel is included by default, the C3 is optional

Q) I'm getting some .net errors
A)To solve minor errors with net there i a new SP1 of net 1.1 LINK
Some have reported better results using .net 2 beta Link

Q) After installing .Net and CP I now have to log in each reboot
A) Net creates a new limited User Account. If you go to User Accounts and delete the limited account , no more login prob.

Q) The new CP is soooo slow.
A) Best way to speed it up is to launch CP and then under prefrences you can tell it to use system skin. This speeds things up amazingly well.

Q) I use WB or StyleXP and want to use that skin for the CP
A) launch CP and then under prefrences you can tell it to use system skin

Q) I don't own/use WBlinds but like a skin
A) you can download and extract a WB skin int the CP's Skins folder and use it as above by launching CP and then under prefrences you can tell it to use the new skin

Q) I can't find Vsync setting
A) Go to the CP and under 3D there is a "No Preview" choice. Select that and in the lower scroll window you will find as about the 4th option down as "Wait for Display refresh"

Q) I don't like the Control Center entry in the context-menu of the desktop
A) how to remove it, without screwing around in registry:
Go to Start|Run... Then type in:
regsvr32 /U "C:\Programme\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\atiacmxx.dll" and ENTER. You have to adjust the path to the dll, of course.

Q) if i go to the display control panel and click advanced.... *bang* right to the bios with a hard reboot....
A)You probably have an old version of RadLinker or RadClocker installed. Uninstall it and install the latest version to fix this problem.

Q) What does CLI mean?
A) Command Line Interface

Q) REforce doesnt work for me now
A) According to a poster you need to first go to Display properties - Advanced - Monitor and make sure Hide unsupported rez's is selected. Then they say it worked.

Q) There is an option to "Force" in display manager, but it only goes as high as 60Hz . I have to specify to to the CP what it's capable of because otherwise everything is stuck at 60Hz.
A) Advanced view->displays manager->right-click on the monitor (not the area around it) and select properties

Hi there

You will need to install the CCC version to get the Overdrive functions or download ATI Tray Tools which is a third party product

If you post in the main section of the forums it would be more benificial.

Thanks :)

@Coolasmoo

hi there

i installed the ccc version and got the function, and i,m aware of attt, i just dont understand it as it was there with the previous cards and same tyoe drivers.

do you think this will affect the performance of the card in anyway

its annoying when u spend £350 on something and somethinglike this appears

do you know why this happens

cheers

p.s i thought i did post this in the main section of the forums hardware-graphic card

Im not sure but i do know that ATi stopped support for overdrive and the old Control Panel quite a few driver revisions ago.

If it was an older card you had before, then it would only support overdrive 3 (latest is 4)and that still works with the old CP as far as i know.
