I do a fair amount of video work and I am thinking about moving away from my P4 and getting a dual core Opteron. To get a good idea of what if any improvement I will get can some people who have Opterons of any flavour do a quick test. You're welcome to do the test with any CPU and post your result.

Download and install DivXtoDVD above. Run the program and leave everything at default and then click on convert with the above SimpsonsTest.avi. Include the fps and rate when it finishes i.e fps 42 (x1.40) and basic system specs mainly CPU speed/FSB/HTT memory speed and timings.

Ideally I would use a larger (i.e 100meg) file to give a better/more accurate average fps but due to size limitations on my web space this will have to do. Thanks.

Hi

Just ran this on my PC (didn't change the priorities in Task Manager or anything, left all of the settings at default)

PC Specs:

- AMD Opteron 146 CPU @ Stock (2Ghz, 10x200)
- 2x1GB HP ECC Registered DDR400 memory @ 200Mhz 3-3-3-8 1T
- ASUS SK8V Motherboard (Via K8T800 chipset)
- 74GB Raptor hard drive
- Windows XP Professional x64 edition

The results were:

FPS: 54.1 (x1.81)
Average Video Bitrate: 3431.7 kbits/s

I've uploaded a screenshot of the finished screen and I've uploaded the log file.

If you want to uploaded a bigger file I've got 2GB of webspace and 100GB bandwidth so I'd be happy to upload it for you :)

not sure if you're interested but my x2 4400 @ 2.64 with 2gb ram at 400mhz 2-3-2-5 got 73fps x2.44

EDIT: just put my ram back to where I normally have it which is 480mhz 3-3-3-8 and got 74.2fps x2.48

I'll also be able to test it hopefully tomorrow with the ram at 520mhz.. might not be the cpu you want testing but you'll have 3 sets of timings and 3 memory speeds.

RE-EDIT: cpu 261x10 mem 1:1 3-4-4-8 1t (524mhz :D) 74.9fps x2.5

just ran it on my dual core 165 at 2.65ghz but it doesnt seem to utilise both cores?

Task manager only shows 50% cpu being used.. got 71fps with 2.37 speed

I use a program called mainconcept to convert avi to mpeg, all to a high standard (at least 5000kps and 384 kps on the audio etc etc) and that can rip through a 90 minute movie in about 21-23 minutes. Just saying, there are better tests out there if u are looking for dual core results ;)

Many thanks people. I suppose I should include mine.
P4 3.2 @3.7 1 gig BH-5@ 2-2-2-5-1T @ 1:1 232Mhz

64.6 fps (X2.16) (no preview)

@cmsbfent
I use a lot of other programs, mainconcept among them but this was just a quick and 'dirty' test to give me a slightly better idea than the reviews I've read. :)

I also realise that the program is not optimised for SMP, but the Opteron speeds shown here etc still give me a good idea of what a dual core may be capable of.

Looks like it will be love at first 'use' when the Opteron gets here. :)
