I normally look forward to Futuremark's offerings, mainly to be blown away by the fantastic eye-candy they come up with.

Anyway, 3dmark06 was a real let down for me. It seems to be just '05 with more textures and colours. One new test (deep freeze, or something). I wasn't even impressed with the HDR. I scored 4707, for what it's worth.

Anyone else feel let down?

I was a tad annoyed cos people with 6600gt's were beating me, but real world performance of my card is far higher so it doesnt bother me anymore.

these benchmarks are flawed due to drivers being by both card companys being optimised for tests.the bottom line is in the games if you can run the modern game to your satisfaction.there 2 routes go the overclocking route(which i have done and had great enjoyment) ,or go for high standard spec(which i am now by buying things secondhand you can get very good saving).You have to rember the top end of gpu market is a very small percentage of the sales for these card companies.It seems very close to arms race the develpment of cards and very soon people are going to say no to forking out £400-600 on cards.the bottom line is can you you tell the difference in 10-25 fps increase so is it worth it to spend that extra cash and save it up for a rainy day :)

I agree, 3dmk06 is not a good reflection on how current games run, eg.
My brothers fx57 @ 3ghz & 1x7800gtx plays games at higher fps than mine (spec below) but the fx57 only scores 4127.

Something is wrong if a 2.75ghz dual core with SLI is being beaten by an fx57 and the same card but single.

3dmk06 scores:
X2 4400 @ 11x250= 2.75Ghz,
2GB 3200 DDR OCZ3200 plat
2 x 7800GTX 256 Aopen @ 470/1.3

3D Mark Score = 7669
SM2 = 3148
SM3 = 3297
CPU = 2059

FX57 @ 15x200= 3Ghz,
1GB 3200 DDR Geil3200
1x7800GTX Aopen @ 450, 1.25

3D Mark Score = 4127
SM2 = 1788
SM3 = 1766
CPU = 1177

But current games play at higher fps on the fx57, maybe because current games use one core unlike 3dmk06 & the ONE 7800gtx is running at 16x (I have said this many times on these forums but no one believes me)

I dont think people are really getting the point of this release from Futuremark, its what the future will be like when Dual Core is optomized in games, how many Single cores are in the top 10 in the rankings in the benchmark thread 1, yes 1 out of 10 and its sits in 10th place 1-9 are Dual Cores and the top 2 are SLi rigs to boot... nobody says life fair.... but its a glimpse of what might be if overpaid programmers ever get round to optimizing both Intels and AMD's Dual Core's.......

The Futures Bright... The Futures DUAL CORE :)

I haven't bothered installing a Futuremark program since 3DMark 2001....that was a last once that actually did what it was supposed to IMO.

Can't beat real world tests these days...

No, you're missing my point. To be honest, if I can play the latest games with everything whacked up and still get decent fps, then I'm pretty happy.

But, I also like being wowed by pretty pictures! I think it goes back to my old C64 and Amiga demo days, sitting there for ages and being impressed by how many different sprites such-and-such group could get on the screen..! :)

I like looking at tech demos and appreciating how great they look, not if my score is 1% better than someone elses. Come on people, size doesn't matter! Well, at least that's what I tell my girlfriend... :)

Yeah same here, i was expecting new demos, but its just a rehash of 05 with a couple of new ones, hence why i aint bothered with it. :(

Fair enough its got HDR and SM3.0 in there which i aint seen yet, but id rather see them in games not a benchmark.

Yeah, now that Futuremark has become 'Americanised', we can expect a new version every year, with less and less features in the 'free' version (to make us subscribe to the 'Pro' version).

I'm unimpressed with it. As said, it doesn't really have any new demos

I don't like the fact that it's nVidia biased either - the 7800GTX 256MB outperforms the X1800XT 512MB but the X1800XT is faster in games! I don't like the way that it kills your score if you don't have SM3 - my X800Pro performs like a 6600GT in 3DM06 but it's far faster in games!

3D Mark 05 was a far better indication IMO
