Very quick question,

Is the x2 4400 worth the extra £100 over the x2 3800?

This is for a Non-Overclocking gaming system

Thanks

personally from what i've seen i'd purchase a opteron 165 or £170 instead as they are both cheaper and both come with 2mb cache (1mb per core), that is if you are planning on overclocking?

Yes the Opty 165 is Dual Core. You wont be able to get an opty 165 for £175 unless it comes fro the U.S. but then you will probably get hit by customs for the VAT. If you are not going to clock the CPU the 4400+ will be faster as they say 1mb cache per core is like having an extra 200mhz of speed. You can always overclock it further down the line for extra speed when you need it.

Sorry, not planning on overclocking...

Thanks Jezzag, 200mhz sounds useful. I'm just currently questioning the £100 increase in price over the 3800.

The x2 4400@ stock 2.2ghz will be roughly the same performance as a X2 3800 running at 2.4ghz

Bearing in mind that nearly all x2 3800's do 2.4ghz on stock voltage. Its just matter of raising the FSB and running the ram on a divider.

This is something that you could do in minutes and following a guide on the net or asking in this forum you could do without any trouble or fuss.

If you are totally not gonna overclock then the rule usually is buy the fastest cpu @stock you can afford.

So if you can afford a 4400 then get one,but in my book the £100 is not worth it,but in the end you have no choice if not overclocking.:)
