Im putting together a spec for my mate, and he simply cant afford a 939 rig,

so will the performance increase from a XP 2500 @ 2.4 (my old cpu!) to a socket 754 3000+ (newcastle core) be dramatic?

Everything else will stay the same (1gb corsair value, ti4200 128mb).

I dont want him thinking hes paid me to do this for no gain at all.
He does allot of dvd burning (ahem) and occasional gaming.

And how are the asus barebones systems for overclocking (if at all)

Who says 939 has to be expensive? Many people have NF3 939 boards for sale - I got a DFI Ultra-D for just £35, an Opty 146 for £115 (new) and upgraded from an XP-M @ 2500 to the Opty @ 2764 for £150. Then I sold the Skt-A mobo and mobile to a friend for £90 so it actually cost me £60.

And the Opty annihilates the XP-M at crunching numbers.
