With a choice and no budget to consider, go dual core! :) Dual 4400+ operating alongside an X1900XT. :p For the price of the AMD64 4000+, it's worth getting the 3800+ X2. Games would run just as well, additionally... with the 3800+ overclocking potential, CPU limited games wouldn't be a problem... with graphics limited games, well.... nothing you can really say here if you own an X1900XT.

If you are not sticking to a budget get a chip with 2x1mb cache like the 4400 or the opteron 170.

The extra cache over the x2 3800 will be better for games.

As quoted there really, if money is no object, get a dual core, no point sticking with a single core processor. FX-60 perhaps? Hmm... maybe not a great recommendation, go with the 4400+ or Opteron 170 and put the rest of the money saved towards some decent RAM and motherboard for decent performance PC.
