I've been looking on the internet recently researching a new gfx card and i've found a lot of benchmark tests and general spec's for different cards.

Apart form a few small adjustments and 20/24pipes instead of 16 there doesn't appear to be a great deal of difference between the 2 chipsets.

Any Comments

I just bought a 6800 GS and have been really impressed at how well it plays games. The 7800's are only £60 more, the 6800 GS was enough for my needs though. Brilliant card.

A lot of it comes down to what res you play and the size of your display. At 1024x768 my 6800 (fully unlocked) can handle anything currently out with max settings and a bit of AA&AF. If I had a big display which demanded higher res then it would be struggling and a 7800/SLi setup would start to pull away.

Sorry to jump in, but I'm in a similar position - I have an SLi motherboard and 1 6800GS. Would I get more performance from adding a second 6800GS or selling the 6800GS and getting a 7800GT?

depends on the resolution you play at. If you play mainly at 16--x1200 or above than then SLI'd 6800GS's would pull ahead but at lower resolutions a single 7800GT would be a better bet.

at which time he will be advised to get the next better single card instead of SLI, due to the same reasons you state above - ie - never go SLI.

Yep SLI is fairly pointless even at 1600X1200 - maybe its worth while at higher res's - i dont know but one 1900xtx seems to perform similar to 2X7800gtx's at that res even lol.
The way SLI seems is that everyone goes wow great performance but when the next gen card comes out - it performs better than the last gen on SLI so no point going SLI by the time you need it, just something Nvidia use to make more money with those guys obsessed with benchmarks.
