I have very similar music taste to you, all I can suggest is some of the bands I love:

The album(s) I would recommend are in brackets.

Avenged Sevenfold (Waking the Fallen, NOT City of Evil)
Atreyu (The Curse)
Story of the Year (In the Wake of Determination)
Slipknot (Vol.3 - Subliminal Verses)
Killswitch Engage (The End Of Heartache)
Queens of the Stoneage (Lullabies to Paralyze & Songs For The Deaf)
Thrice (The Artist in the Ambulance)
Vision of Disorder (From Bliss to Devastation)

Have fun!!

City of evil is an amazing album! Either listen to it and blank out the singer and his lyrics (because instrumentally its like audible viagra) or just love the whole cheesey package! 2006 is the year of the cheese metal with Dragonforce leading the way and Avenged Sevenfold following closely behind!

Some thrash bands/albums along the same lines as The Haunted:
Dew Scented - Issue IV
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
American Head Charge - The Art of War

More melodic, a bit like In Flames:
Dark Tanquillity - Damage Done
Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll

Obviously they have plenty of other albums, however I think these are the most popular ones :)

Also I haven't mentioned Slayer as thrash as I assume you already know them? If not, then they're also reommended

Arch Enemy are worth checking out too if you like heavier stuff

erm.....

second killswitch album is great (alive or just breathing)

all 3 avenged sevenfold albums are brilliant - they go in reverse order for me - ie sounding the seventh trumpet gets the most plays (Its just so raw its excellent) then waking the fallen (brilliant - i real killer metal album) and then city of evil (it is really very good - shame that shadows bust a blood vessle in his throat - not only did it stop him screaming, but made his singing vioce in general a bit weaker)

i am a SERIOUS a7x fan :D

you have similar taste to me also - alough i like some quite different metal (and hiss and spit at slipknot lol)

thrice are ok - sound a bit punky imo

triviums first was ok but asendancy is of generally a higher standard - very good

try bleeding through - there quite heavey, not quite as musical about it as a7x but there good non the less, they have a nw album out soon aswell i think (the truth)

btw - are in flames any good? - may give them a try - whats there good stuff and what should i avoid?

In Flames are brilliant. It's all good, Colony is the best album I think closely followed by Whoracle.
