I believe it was Explicit who recommended me a spec last week. I have waited until the 'Thursday specials' before commiting my order and have now made a change to the graphics card... and also gone over my budget! But what the heck! What is the point in trying to save £30-40 when already blowing £500. Would any one mind casting their eyes over this just to make sure I am not missing anything:-

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939) - OEM (ADA3200BPBOX) (CP-118-AM) £129.00
Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) £82.19
Tagan TG530-U15 530W ATX2.01 Easycon SLi Compliant Modular Silent PSU (CA-008-TG) £70.14
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 160GB 1600JS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-047-WD) £56.34
Leadtek GeForce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-069-LT) £193.82

£530.49
Price maybe a few pence out.

Still tempted by a hiper PSU as seem a lot cheaper and they have some strong supporters. I have been using a generic 350w PSU for about 4 years now and have never had a problem so a bit "anti" spending too much on a PSU as a result. Not sure why he recommended the Western Dig as personally would have gone for the Hitachi and chose the Leadtek as from reviews these all overclock the same + the games bundle.

thoughts appreciated before the card comes out....

I'd stretch the budget £6 and go for the X1800XT, much faster than the 7800.
You'd more fine with a 430W modular tagan to save penny's there, I run 430W Tagan on both the PC's in my sig.

Hi Big Dom. I think the worry was that the 430W PSU would not support SLI if I was to use this in the future?
Well mine supports 6600's in SLI mode but not sure how much less power they draw. Biggest worry it seems at the moment is single line draw on dual rail PSU's. Tagan's are switchable so don't have that issue. But a little bigger is a sensible precation although I think you should go ATI as the 1800 is a much better card for the same price (essentially).

The only problem is that the price gap between the 7800GT and the X1800XT 256MB has now increased. 7800GTs have dropped in price by roughly £30. But if you can get the X1800XT, that would be a very good buy. Look for some more pennies in that old suit jacket, under the bed etc :p

Didn't spot he'd used inclusive pricing.. still they're worth the £30.

Thanks guys for your help. Just putting my order through now... I'll post in a bit what I've ordered. All I'll reveal is that it has changed a bit but there is good reason...

No! I have decided to go for the following-

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939) - OEM (ADA3200BPBOX) (CP-118-AM) £127
Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) £82
Tagan TG530-U15 530W ATX2.01 Easycon SLi Compliant Modular Silent PSU (CA-008-TG) £70
Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 NCQ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (0A31637) (HD-001-HI) £56
Leadtek 6600GT £82

So why the Leadteck? Well it is the poorer relation to the rest of the system but with the new 7900 round the corner I think I'll wait to see what price they come in at or what price the 7800's go down to. Wise?

Opps the processor price is wrong.. but corrected this comes out around £434 which was close to my orignal budget and leaves some change to pick up a new graphics card in a couple of months. :D

Well that CPU is certainly a good one to take (1MB cache) instead of the 3500+ and atleast you have the main organs sorted. Once graphics card prices drop (as they inevitably will) then you can fit the finishing piece to the puzzle! :D

I still need a case... really can't decide on one yet but will build in my existing for the moment and maybe treat it to a new case and card in a couple of months. I really like the Chieftecs but they are enormous. I have found a midi version .. what do you reckon?

Midi Dragon. Can only seem to get in black though. I quite like the look of the Silverstone Temjin TJ01 though - do you know anything about this one? Also the Lian-Li PC-7 which I have read is v good. Decisions, decisions... a wonder I ever get anything done!
