hi guys , just wanted to ask if anyone has been to Syria for tourism that is. It is an archaelogic paradise , has the biggest ancient city in the world , Palmyra, and lots of others to see (antioch, Apamea, Damascus, Byzantine fortress, Arab early mosques etc). Also it is cheap and not far from here (1:30 approx. hours flight from ATH).

so , anyone? :D

Visit Homs and Hama, they're worth a visit. If you go to Palmyra there is a 'door into the hill' opposite the hotel (there used to be only one hotel, no idea what it is there now). Get the receptionist to give you the key and ask them to switch the lights on. It is quite remarkable, real Indiana Jones stuff! I won't spoil the surprise for you!

Crac des Chevaliers is well worth a visit, the paintings done by Luke which the oil drips from is worth seeing as is the oldest church in the world (can't remember its name).

Le Meridien and the Sheraton used to be the only nightspots worth visiting.

All my info dates from 1987-89, so I may be a little out of date!
