Isn't it funny how some people just seem to reject society and go against the grain? I'm sure they think it's cool.

Absolutely. It drives me nuts :( Of course "best film" is wholly subjective and down to personal opinion....but clearly some people need hitting over the head with a crowbar. Hard.

Godfather, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, LOTR, Lock Stock, Snatch, Memento, T2, Die Hard, Gladiator, Good Will Hunting, Platoon, Se7en, Goodfellas, Green Mile, Bladerunner, Braveheart, Indiana Jones, Alien, Jaws, Great Escape, Leon, Rocky, Usual Suspects.

Off the top of my head. I've mentioned some that are parts of trilogies or whatever, didn't bother naming the individual ones. Wanted to keep the list down.

Pretty much my list too although I'd add "Wargames" and "The Goonies" to it. Usual Suspects had a great ending when I first saw it. Just watching through The Godfather trilogy at the moment and can see why people think it's so good. :)

...My idea of 'best film' is one that I can watch time and again (within reason) and still enjoy, whilst feeling like there's nothing that could be done to improve it.....

I follow similar logic and for me my 2 'Best Films' are Dodgeball and South Park, although Fight Club, Se7en, Ghostbusters II and Armageddon are also class IMO

I've just watched the opening scenes of Full Metal Jacket again and IMHO it is the best film opening of all time. In fact I think it is my new favourite film. What do y'all think?

Prefer Platoon myself.

I like some films that most people haven't even heard of. Because they simply touch me or have a huge effect on the way I think about things. Namely;

Magnolia
Amores Perros
21 Grams
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
The Shawshank Redemption
Requiem for a Dream
Fighter in the Wind

I have plenty more, too. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference and, j00ni, I understand your point when you say you wouldn't call your films the greatest films. I feel that way about most of the films that I personally enjoy more than any other. :)

Its right hard to catergorize just one film as the best, so here are the ones that are what I think are just quality. Most of them have been mentiond before, but who cares :p ;)

Ben Hur
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Scarface
Ocean's 11
Goodfellas
Bladerunner
Rocky
No Man's Land (Sheen)

Lawrence of Arabia and Bladerunner. Honourable mention to The Killing Fields and Doctor Zhivago though.

Seeing Lawrence of Arabia (restored) on 70mm at a cinema a few weeks ago was quite quite extraordinary. The DVD quality is pathetic in comparison. I think those two films are head over heels above the rest for a combination of story, acting, atmosphere, cinematography and soundtrack. And they're not shallow films. Both attaining pretty much perfection in my book.
