phpmyadmin setup problem

I've just uploaded phpmyadmin, created the config files, set all writable permissions but for some reason I can't connect to the server (#2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured). Does anyone have some sort of example config.inc.php file which I can edit (I think it would be easier than the web based setup).

Is MySQL its self actually running?

Yup, I've been using it with my CMS. I managed to connect to it as well using a client program I downloaded, I just can't get the phpmyadmin to work.
