So I signed up to Blogger.com - it has all the very basic features I want but for now I want to keep my blog private and use it as a diary/journal for myself to read and write only and it appears Blogger is unable to password protect blogs for viewing.

Is there a blog service that will allow me to upload content but restrict who can read it on the interweb ?

any reason why you want password protection?
also this would be better off in the HTML/Graphics forums or maybe the windows and other software?

maybe live jornal has it but I've not seen a blogger site that has password protected pages,
maybe you could setup the whole thing on your own PC?

you can get a client that allows you to update. i havent used LJ for about 2 years so they might have that facility now. best way is to sign up and find out. it's free :)

You want a way of writing something that no-one else can read?

Why not use notepad and a password protected screensaver?
