Trying to decide between an x1800 512MB or a new 7900GT 256MB, any suggestions on which is better? I know ATI IQ is meant to be a little better.

well on paper at least the 7900gt just looks like a speed bumped 7800gtx and so will be level pegging with the X1800XT 512 when AA is not used and falling behind when it is used. (ATI still seemt o have this strength where they don't get as big a hit with AA as their nvidia counterparts whilst not compromising on image quality)

I just went X1800XT 512MB - seeing as the 7900GT is just a speed bumped 7800GTX and the X1800XT flattened the 256MB GTX, I don't see how the 7900GT will beat it. It will probably be on par but with half the memory...

At resolutions over 1280 with AA/AF it should be clearly better thank to the extra memory, but other than that I would expect it to be a nose ahead in all games / situations other than Quake / Doom.

Im thinking the same, in that french review the 7900 GT beats the 7800 GTX by a few FPS and the x1800xt is better than the 7800 GTX ( not sure how much better ) so they are probaly about the same. Altho I would like to see some tests with high quility settings.
Most importantly tho I can get the x1800xt right now :D

I bought one and I'm certainly not disappointed. Although I'm currently limited to 1024x786 by my monitor, I will hopefuly eventually upgrade and then get a 19". At the moment, even with this res my X800XT was struggling with AA and AF but this card doesn't even blink. I run 16x 6x everything on max on all games and it runs very smoothly. I currently have it running 690/800 through overdrive fine (well it looped 3DMark05 for 1 hour fine, though oddly 3DM03 crashed my system - still, plays CoD2 and HL2 fine so probably 3DM03 is corrupt). I just use Overdrive because when I tried to do it myself, it all went wrong - I need a proper OC tool as ATi Tool is still so buggy with this card.

Also, the 512MB X1800XT is cheaper than the 7900GT 256MB - a no brainer for me.

It just got more complicated. Ive just begged the extra money out of my wife for a x1900xt  but i cant help but think I dont needed this card as I only game at 1280. However can I resist having one! Im trying to tell my self I might as well get a x1800xt and another gig of ram but that just aint as much fun as a x1900xt. Its all so hard

Go for the X1800XT 512MB.
The 7900GT cards you can get are more expensive.
Also the 512MB ram will help at higher res & in the long run when newer game engines are out, will be better as well.

Early reviews now show the X1800XT beating the 7900GT - that should be the deciding reason to get the X1800XT.

7900 GT is better in the benchies...
Not sure on IQ though, but do you play a game to stand a look at a brick or a fence & admire it?
Only reason i'd go for a X1800 over the 7900 GT is the 512mb may come in handy in about 6 months to a years time!

right. made my mind up. Going for the x1800xt 512 with some more memory. As much as I want it the x1900xt is just over kill for me at 1280 res.
The only thing that is worrying me is unreal, oblivion coming out soon. Will I need the extra power?
Also am I to late for delivery tomorrow? Trying to ring OCers but its busy.
What a suprise

Well it might be at the lower res's but the same can be said of the 256MB XT. At any res of 1280x1024 and above, the XT pulls out a lead.

I went from an X1800XL to X1900XT and there was/is a marked increase in performance. Where FEAR and COD2 used to slow down a fair bit, both these games now run flawlessly and maintain highish framerates. I did get a VERY good price for the X1800XL though so that helped sway my decision. Incidentally, BF2 plays like butter at 1280 x 1024 with max AA and AF and all game options at max.
