Read this weeks specials, like the look of new (to me) 1900 graphics cards.

Question is for my rig is the performance/quality difference worth the buy now for my needs?

Rig:
DFU Nforce4 UltraD PCI Express board, 1gig corsair (275 fsb rated but @ 200)
Imagequest L90D+ 19" TFT @ 1280x1024

Currently running with a X800XL

I use PC for work (development), Watching Movies and games such as COD2 and Guild Wars.

The Powercolour X1900XT @ £239.95 (£281.94 with VAT) or is is worth the extra over that for the HIS Excalibur X1900XT-X @ £269.45 (£317.19 with VAT) ?

Or reading the forums, is there still some powercolors (I assume the one I mention above) that have the "-X" memory and therefore same as the Excalibur but cheaper :)

Please advise, I am not up to speed on graphics cards

Thanks

Anyone?

I use 1280x1024 (native resolution) on tft but find COD2 struggles like hell, down to 14 or less fps in some areas, with DX9 mode.
It would be nice to ramp up levels to enjoy it.
Also have HL2 and Quake4

I think the rest of my rig is still pretty good, just whether one of these new cards will give me that "glorious technicolor" boost.

TIA

Hey man, get the x1800xt 256 at the current price it is a steal, i have the 512 version which is marginally faster, like marginally! I play at the same res as you and it will run anything you throw at it at that res with no problems at all!

IF you have the extra cash though the x1900xt is certainly a steal this week!

If it's ramping all the settings up to full, then go for the x1900xtx

I'm running COD2 with a 1900xtx and it handles well. I don't think I'd want to take any drop in performance though and thats why I don't recommend the 1900xt.

The xtx is worth the extra IMHO

CoD2 is a bugger on some high end pc's in dx9 mode i am afraid, I am an admin for CoD2 on Enemydown.co.uk and the general concensus there is to run in dx7, only guys with sli rigs manage good framerates and even then they get some fps drops especially with smoke etc

hope this helps

Thanks for info guys
Cod2 in my main game atm
G1BB0, I wrote an admin tool for COD (and COD2) called Rcon4Cod, you tried it?

I suppose the only question left is if I should get the connect3d XT has it has the 1.1 memory (which I assumes rates it as a a xt-x)

Thanks for feedback

I've got an Athlon 64 3500, and 1 gig RAM.

Using max settings @ 1280x960 I ran a quick benchmark using FEAR before (X800XL) and after (Powercolor X1900XT).

All details were cranked up as far as possible with vsync on (as i'm using an LCD monitor).

X800XL
Min fps: 2
Av fps: 21
Max fps: 67
Below 25fps: 67%
Between 25 and 40fps: 23%
Above 40fps: 10%

X1900XT
Min fps: 22
Av fps: 40
Max fps: 62
Below 25fps: 5%
Between 25 and 40fps: 49%
Above 40fps: 46%

X1900XT (vsync off)
Min fps: 22
Av fps: 57
Max fps: 163
Below 25fps: 5%
Between 25 and 40fps: 34%
Above 40fps: 61%

Basically doubled the average fps and the game is perfectly playable maxed out.

The XT-X is only slightly faster than the XT, so whether the extra cost is worth it for just a couple of extra fps is entirely up to your budget!

You have COD2 for testing?

Is Fear using DX9? I have not got that game.

Just ran the techpowerup.com D-Day timedemo. I had all the settings on full at 1280@960, and got the following result:

Sync Every Frame YES:2136 frames, 73 seconds, 29.3 fps
Sync Every Frame NO:2136 frames, 64.5 seconds, 33.1 fps

I think FEAR uses DirectX9.
