Hiya all,
I got a silly question...I'm after another server (may have one from the MM)
and I may put Linux on, but from a SETI/BOINC point of view, which would be faster at crunching Linux or Wind Server 2003???

I quite fancy a Linux server, but could have either....

What you all reckon?

for SETI classic the fastest method was the windows client running under WINE on gnu/linux but given that there are optimised clients available for most OSs for BOINC / SETI it shouldn't make that much difference.

of course the £100 or so you save by not having to buy a windows license would mean you could buy a faster processor ;)

I would need to run a webserver to at least justify to myself the outlay...
I have a need to try out os commerce and/or cubecart
Server is "only" a dual 1ghz PIII, so it's not gonna make a huge difference me feels

Think of it this way, one costs money and the other costs time/effort (if you're a rookie). What do you value more? Personally I'd go Linux every time becasue, as Mrs. TheImpaler puts it, I'm worthless. :D

A hundred bones in the bank is worth it to me.

mrs impaler....OUCH!
well it's fallen through anyway, so it's a moot point now!
will keep a lookout for another cheap server or cheap dually stuff...but as I've just managed to get hold of some S939 stuff in the MM it will be next month at the earliest!
