Mercedes race car engines in the '50s ran with desmodromic valves - basically, as the valve is mechanically opened and closed (rather than relying on a spring to close it) you get better valve control at high engine speeds and eliminate valve float. Also, as the engine doesn't have to work against springs to open the valves you get a reduction in the effort required to open them, increasing the power.
