Is the 6800GS cooler loud? Shall I get an artic cooling one?

Hi, I am just about to buy the XFX 6800GS XXX edition on this week only but I was wondering is it worth buying the arctic cooling 5 cooler for it? Are they difficult to fit and is the warranty void on the card by fitting one? Can anyone tell me if they can hear their 6800GS fan over the CPU cooler/fans/PSU? And is it speed controllable?

I don't know about the 6800gs cooling solutions but I've got an Arctic Cooler on my 6800gt(pre-fitted as it was a Galaxy card) and although it works fine I'd probably suggest going for a Zalman cooler as both quieter and more effective.

just got one of these and the standard cooler is stupidly loud compared to my old agp 6800.

i'd advise getting the cooler, i'm waiting for one to turn up.

i've adjusted mine on 2d using gainwards expert tool and u can hear it power up the fan when i start 3d.

yes it will void the warrenty if you replace the stock cooler afaik.

As above really. It is very loud on startup and when its switched to 3d mode, its by far the loudest component in my pc. Using a tweaker I've changed the fans speeds for each setting which has helped, but I'd seriously consider buying a specialist 'quiet' cooler.

I'd have to agree with everyone else... Whilst it's not the loudest card around, I'd definitely advise buying a silent (or nearly silent) cooler. I certainly will be as soon as I can afford to.

Is it possible to control the fan speed on the OCUK 6800 GS? If it is, which program should I use?

Sorry about the thread hijack but what cooler is recommended for the 6800GS?
I've just got one and its a heck-of-a noisy, exacerbated by the fact I have a LANfire case (which are pretty thin and offer no sound dampening).

I had an arctic cooler for my 9800 Pro which did the business and I have plenty space round my graphics card. Which of the ones on the OCUK site would fit?

i use gainwards xpert tool, only control the 2d fan speed tho and hack the file to put it at 25%, i leave 3d as it is being as gaming in thru headfones so i cant hear it that much and it keeps the card cooler.

I've also been trying to quieten my Geforce 6800 GS OC recently. I tried Expertool as suggested but I can't get it to work with my BFG 6800 GS. I installed it, went into fan control and set 2D mode at 50% (it won't give me the option of 25%..). But a few seconds after I've set the fan I hear it return to defualt speed. The same thing happens if I set the fan to 100%, within a few seconds it drops back down to defualt again. Something is continually overiding Expertool, is there any way around this?

You must edit the dfc.ini file to get a lower value than 50% and you have to set the attributes to write-protect.

Thanks for the advice. I changed the values and set it to fixed and made the ini read only and its working now. I have the fan at 25% for 2D and its just totally silent now when not gaming!

BTW does anyone know what kind of temps are ok for the 6800GS GPU?

Given that the 6800gt is apparantly ok at up to around 120C then I'd assume the 6800gs to be about the same however I'd more realistically suggest anywhere up to ~90C will be ok overall, if you find temperatures going above that then I'd start worrying.

i got a nv5 silencer on my 6800 and temps never go over 59c unless it gets clogged up with dust :p

for the £10 inc vat its the best cooler your gonna get for the money and it helps pumt the heat out of the case.
