5.5 to 62 from what i was just reading.

367bhp :D

Gotta be a really serious alternative to the M5, whats the M5 new price? This is at £43,550 starting price.

Sorry fox, i just didnt realise they had released a 550i and got a bit excited :p

M5 (5.0 litre) starting price is over £63k but has a whopping 507 bhp!!!!!!!! (.........but 19.1 mpg)

550I M SPORT 5.0 litre 367 bhp = £46k

M3 3.3 litre 343 bhp for £43k

Saw one of these at Silverstone on the weekend.

On the passenger seat was a a4 sized folder and embroidered on it was "Tiff Needell"

Don't know if it was his or what though.

What to make it appear slower than it actually is!? 530d and or 535d both see the 550i off to 100mph IIRC

I dont buy that for one second, what on earth makes you think that the same car but with an engine producing around 150BHP less would possibly be quicker accelerating at any speed?

The 550i looks like an awesome proposition to me, i can see this being a potential purchase in a few years time.

535d

0-60 = 6secs
0-100 = 15 secs

530d

0-60 = 7.3
0-100 = 19.4

550i (actually a 4.8l V8)
0-60 = 5.5
0-100 = 14.2

So, for the price and the greater standard spec of the 535d - I know what i'd rather have!

And for the last time - it really isn't all about BHP! ;)

I dont know where those stats are from but just look at them, they are clearly rubbish. There is no way that an E60 with 370BHP is going to take nearly 15 seconds to hit 100mph. I'd put it at more like 12 seconds, maybe slightly under, going on the power to weight and the stats of the 545i and M5, looking at the powers of each.

And yes, it IS all about power at the wheels when talking about virtually identical cars in a drag race, all driven by professional drivers (etc etc).

Well BMW must be being conservative! They are BMW stats from the E90 Forums (owners who actually have these cars!)

The 545 used to hit 100 in 13.7 seconds but is a lighter car.

Considering the 535d pulls 70Nm of torqe more than the 550i and at 1500rpm less, its not impossible to see the closeness!

My favourite figure though

550i - 50-75 in 4th = 5.2s
535d - 50-75 in 4th = 4.1s

Funny as funk!

Yeah, but if you want actual acceleration, then you would be in the right gear at the time, even if that involved shifting, in-gear times are pathetic. 3rd is probably a more fitting gear for 50-75MPH in the petrol.

Ok Ok, i'm not petrol bashing! I just prefer diesels for 'real world' driving over petrols, epsecially Diesels with two turbos! And considering the cost of both

(M Sport variants) is some £6k! You could happily re-map for the 535d for less than £400 and have (IIRC) 360bhp and 700Nm of torque.....

That matched the 550i bhp and gets it to that bhp a hell of a lot quicker thanks to the torque! You've also saved yourself £5500!

Do you see where i'm coming from!? (not everyone wants to be shifting down, when they can just plant it!)

You're going to have to change up quicker though because the deisel has virtually no revs to spend :D

Drive both then decide which you want, you can't choose a car by looking at the stats on paper really.

Thing is, you'd have to downshift in th diesel to be in 4th anyway, so those figures involve a gear change regardless of which car you're in.... in which case it'd be no extra effort to change down to 3rd instead of 4th in the petrol.

When it comes down to it, assuming you are prepared to keep the car in it's power band, bhp is a pretty good indicator of performance.
