USB Modems & Broadband - Is this true?

Im currently using an old bt voyager modem to connect to bt broadband. At the moment its connecting at 2.2Mb.

On bt's website it says this about usb modems and broadband -

"Other older equipment will work but won't allow you to enjoy the full potential of up to 8Mb speed - for example it may constrain your speed to around 4Mb even when your line can physically support higher speeds."

Is this true? Seeing as they are upgrading everyone to up to 8Mb i was wondering if getting a proper router would let me connect at higher speeds??
