hey guys,

my dad needs an upgrade as his computer has given up the ghost.

he wants the best value for money upgrade for a mobo chip and ram ...

i was thinking this:

Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard
£36.95
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail
£169.95
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3
£104.95
Subtotal £311.85
VAT £54.58
Total £366.43

he has got a radeon 9600pro gfx card atm hense the duel mobo.

is it worth getting a better make one with internal gfx and scrapping the 9600pro?

is this the best bang for buck?

cheers lads

well if he doesnt use any graphics intensive programs then i reckon that isnt bad.

why 2 gig of ram though?
Yeah, is he planning on some serious gaming because 1GB (& some value ones) will do :D & again, is X2 3800+ really necessary? If really want to go Dual-Core, Intel Pentium 4 930D is cheaper & might be better. A motherboard with onboard graphics will also do.

Does he have a budget?

Anyhow:
  • Intel Pentium 4 930 Dual Core "LGA775 Presler" 3.0GHz (800FSB) - Retail (CP-112-IN) £119.95
  • Asus P5LD2-VM Intel 945G Micro ATX (LGA775) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-110-AS) £69.95
  • Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) (MY-083-CS) £59.95
  • Subtotal £249.85
  • Shipping (City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)) £8.25
  • VAT £45.17
  • Total £303.27

cheers for the spec mate.

he uses photoshop and things so duel core would be good.

he doesn't have a budget, just best bank for buck.

how much slower is your speced setup?

i thought for photoshop 2gb would be better?

he doesn't play games .. just his 2500 xp went bye bye and he wants to upgrade ...

SLOWER  Who said its slower? AMD's game performance makes everyone assume that P4's are all-round slower, see this

If no budget, then go for 2GB saves upgrading later anyway (& also in case he deals with mega large files in PhotoShop).

I'd go for what I've listed + Corsair 2GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x1GB) (VS2GBKIT667D2) (MY-097-CS) £135.07 incl. VAT

As for the other queries, here or here :D
