Advice 800xl to 7600GT upgrade?

Hi, has anyone here upgraded from a 800xl to 7600GT (PCI-E)?

I'm looking for a short and quiet upgrade (probably with a zalman).

I know all about the 7900gt and how much faster it would be, but I want to know if 800xl > 7600gt will be faster

Barely faster. A 7600GT is about comparable to an X850 XT

Also - with the stock cooler they certainly aren't quiet. The silly little fan on the XFX card i have sounds like a dentist drill when it spins up. The fan on my X800 GTO2 is a far more pleasant noise.

I'd hang on until a more significant upgrade is in your price range
