I have the oppotunity to buy 1 of the 3 listed cars below, from a friend. I'm not sure on the price of them all, but I was offered the 106 for £400-500

1) 1996 Peugeot 106 1.1i XN in Red, 89,000 No mot, no tax.
2) 1996 Ford Escort 1.8i Ghia X, in metallic blue, 109,000, not tax, no mot.
3) 1996 Rover 414i, in Red, 80,000, no tax, no mot.

Insurance is: £854.70, £1168.65, £1056.30 respectively

As far as I'm aware there's nothing wrong with any of the cars and there is no visible damage to any.

I'm not bothered about what they look like or how fast they go. I just want a car that will be cheap to buy and won't cost me an arm and leg to run.
I will be using it to travel from York to Leicester once or twice a month, but mainly will be used to and from work (~3 miles)

I've got my VFR400 for speed :)

Thanks for your help.

Which ever one needs the least amount doing to pass an MOT.

^ sound's like the right option, would the selers of any of them put it through an MOT for you or let you put it though and MOT before you buy it? It doesn't hurt and tbh it would be well worth £30 to see what it fails on...

Let me explain the situation:

My friend Lesley owns a large amount of land. A Car salesman pays pays lesley X amount of money to store cars on Lesley's land. The Car salesman hasn't payed Lesley for some time. So he owes Lesley a lot of money. The car salesman has offered Lesley one of the three remaining cars.

So I won't be able to test drive them all. It will be a case of me choosing one and then test driving that to see if it's ok. So basicly they're sold as seen :(

I had a 106 1.1 and now have a 1996 1.6i Escort LX, the Escort is better by far compared to the 106, especially being a Ghia as well.

edit/ although just seen the Escort is on 110,000 miles, my one has done 116,000 miles and I've just had to do a bit of work on it to get it to pass the MOT but that's more my fault for not getting it serviced enough.

The 106 is a fun car though but it just isn't very fast.

Definately not the 106 - worst car on the list, black plastic bumpers, uncomfortable, wind up windows, etc.

Either the Escort or the Rover but given neither have any MOT it seems like a whole world of pain just waiting to annoy you.

Didnt you have a 306?

I second that, none of these cars are worth more than £100 in current condition.

You can pick up a 10year old car with MOT and Tax for <£400.

Double that and you actually get a nice, fairly respectable car... I spy with my little eye something beginning with M?

I would probably take the Ford out of the lot.

More importantly, I would tell Lesley to bollock that dealer for trying to fob him off with knackered cars and get cash instead. :p

I wouldn't pay £500 for any of them either. Especially not from a without a test drive. None of them have MOTs so presumabley they need work doing to get them through the MOT. All that'll happen is that it'll turn out you've bought a dog and you'll get annoyed with your friend. If they were really cheap then it might be worth it, but not for £500.

Remember this is a car trader selling cars WITHOUT an MOT!

Why the hell would he do that, he could MOT them and increase his profits, probably double them. Why hasn't he? Maybe they are sheds!

The cars have been stood on his land for well over a year. The cars mot's have expired. So they might just pass without any problems.

Fox I did have a 2000 306 GLX 1.8i.

'Black plastic bumpers, uncomfortable, wind up windows' Don't bother me too much. I basicly want a cars thats cheap to buy and cheap to run. If the Escorts gonna be just as cheap and reliable as the 106 then I'd rather have the escort, despite the higher insurance costs.

In your opionion is 89,000 miles on a 1.1 peugeot engine better or worse than 109,000 on a 1.8 ford engine??

Yea or they might fail miserably after being sat in a field for over a year!

What happened to that?

You WILL change your mind after suffering the mind numbing horribless that is doing any sort of miles in a poverty spec 1.1 106.

Worse - although the Escort is a rubbish car (But perhaps less rubbish than the other 2) the engine is probably a 1.8 16v Zetec engine which is actually a very good engine.

I pranged it beyond repair, I really liked the car, but its well out of price range at the moment.

I don't plan to keep the car for a long time.

I'm doing my final year at uni this september. After that I have the choice of continuing for another year at Leeds met and keeping the car. Or trading the car in and spending something in the region of £2500. By then my insurance should be lowers as I'll be 20 with hopefully 1 years NCB

So I could be keeping the car for just a year.
