I'm going to order one of the above to go in a computer using my old agp card using an asrock dual mobo using a gig of ram I already have. I'm not a huge gamer. I do a fair amount of encoding of vids.
it seems the 3200 overclocks better than the 3700 relatively speaking. ill be overclocking using an freezer pro fan.
which should I buy? if the 3200 clocks better to nearly a 3700 (when clocked) should I just save the money? have I got tjis totally wrong

cheers

For the price the 3700+ is a steal, and if youre encoding videos i think that the extra cache may help.
What he said really. Forget overclocking, the 1MB L2 on the 3700+ will be much more appreciated by your encoding programs/etc.

if your encoding then i would go for the 3700 with the extra cache, will overclock higher probably too.
why not try an opteron instead? that has the extra cache of the 3700 at the price of the 3200, will overclock better than the pair of them probably also. :D

I hadn't thought of opterons. which one were you thinking of? you couldn't give me a rough price too cos I'm viewing on my phone sneakily while at work and I can't browse the web properly

cheers

There's no point in getting an opteron atm. Yeah sure you get the same cache as the 3700, but for MORE MONEY with a slower core speed. Go for the 3700.

all the socket 939 optys have 1mb level 2 cache.
all of them are great! i would never buy a socket 939 athlon when you can get these!
my 144 opteron was basically a 3000 athlon with 1mb of cache and it clocked straight up to 2.8 ghz, with that amount of cache you see what that was equivalent too! cheap as chips as well! :D

my 146 runs 24/7 @ 3 ghz.. excellent chip and in my eyes the only real option available to s939, they are far higher quality than the desktop cpu because they are designed for the high stress server environment!

best bang for buck since the mk1 golf gti! :D

yeah the 3700 is a bargain here at the moment, but the opteron is the better cpu, if you get one secondhand that is a good stepping like mine you will probably come out at about the same money surely?

these opty are a great buy second hand cos of the strength of them. i wouldnt buy a second hand desktop cpu cos they crap out a lot easier than an opty.

just chucking an idea his way, lettin him now all the options!
as for rough price.. 140 posted for my 146! ;)

i have two pc's both on asrock dual sata II
one has 3200 and one has 3700 both are overclocked
3200 will take 2hrs to encode a film
3700 will take just over an hour to encode a film
the 3700 is the better chip by far and very cheap oem on here at the moment
the two rigs have different graphics cards in so i couldnt compare graphically as one is agp the other is pcie
got to be 3700 oem for the price

144 are 123 with vat here and 146 are about 150, as stated above though the 3700 here is a very good deal at the minute. still prefer opterons .. :p
