Hi again,

Need a spec for a friends brother this time - how come i always get roped in!?
Got £1000 to spend. (MAX - just don't go too crazy)

To be used for gaming, multitasking etc.

Needs to have a 19" tft, mouse, keyboard and speakers if you can fit it in, oh and windows - it should be possible for you guys i think.

Much appreciated

Explicit has given you a good specification there, I don't see anything that I think I'd change really other than maybe getting Geil Value instead of the OcUK value and possibly getting a newer version of the NEC DVDRW :)

^ Cheers mate :) Geil ram has gone a bit pricey these days, used to be £105.69 now around the £135 mark so I left it out. NEC 4570 only £1 more so yeah, change that for sure :)

Lol i know i was just looking at that. Perhaps "value" isn't the best way to describe it as we're 'meant' to all be moving to ddr2.

Thanks for the idea's so far, it's just a competitor has offered a similar spec for a similar price with a x2 4200, but only a 7600gt! I wanted to give my friends pc more power graphically speaking so should i be able to justify the lower cpu performance against the graphical performance?

The X2 4200 is a bit of a 'nothing' CPU as far as I am concerned, it costs more than the 3800 but has the same amount of cache and doesn't as a general rule overclock any better but it doesn't have the benefit of 1mb L2 cache like the 4400.

I'd go with Explicit's specification and overclock the 3800 as you should be able to reach 4200 speeds easily if not higher. You only need 200mhz extra per core to equal the 4200 at 2.2ghz, many people have got to FX60 speeds(2.6ghz) on air so while there are no guarantees I'd take the better graphics card and run :)

You could potentially fit AM2 into the budget just about but at the moment they are just ported socket 939 chips so probably not worth it plus DDR2 is marginally more expensive.

I hadn't realised that Geil had jumped so much in price, the OcUK value stuff will be fine.

I know what you mean about the 4200 being a nothing cpu, but i don't know wether I would feel comfortable overclocking my friends cpu and leaving it be. But i suppose i could put a sycthe on the x2 3800 and clock it a little bit.

EDIT: So i'll go for pretty much my spec with a scythe and a 3800 instead of the opty and zalman

Sounds like a plan
