If I buy a Sky + box secondhand (along with a viewing card) - will I still be able to record the Free to Air channels available from Sky (as in BBC1 / ITV2 etc) - I do not want to subscribe to any package, and do not intend connecting it to a phone line.

I already have a standard sky box which I setup myslef, which isn't on a subscription package, so I get all the free channels.

Some people say you need to subscibe to a basic package - others have said I can record, but not pause / time shift the Free channels available.

Anyone cancelled Sky+ and still been able to record BBC ?

In short, no. Sky+ functionality requires Sky to enable it, this costs £10pm.

The fee is waived if you subscribe to premium channel packages.

It may be worth waiting.

I think SKY have been "ordered" to produce a Sky Cam so that other boxes can be used with Sky cards.

Dreamboxes can already do this but I am not sure if they can be discussed here as can be used to obtain unsubscribed serviced (although not Sky).

Basically, there are loads of good Satellite PVR's on the market, it's just a matter of time before you can use them with Sky.

You would be able to record with them too (They do not use Sky's EPG though, they will have their own).
