Who could afford over £4,000 for a PC!?

I was browsing around today, and saw a machine that was more than £4,000. I was literally quite amazed at how high priced this was, and looking at the difference in price between machines bought here, all I could see was a £1,000 excess price tag for liquid-cooling.

Would anyone be mad to pay such an extortinate price elsewhere when you have the best machines to buy from here already?

If I had the money, I'd overkill on a PC.

But personally, if I had £4000 to spare, I'd rather build one myself with Watercooling/Vaporchill

can get a capable pc for £1000

I would agree with the edited quote above, but believe me £1000 doesnt go far on the main pc , and remember you have to add a monitor also ( which can easily add another £400 or more for a large w/s model)

For example:

£100 over the budget already of this £1000, and you have a pretty reasonable pc, but certainly not hi-spec and thats without keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers and software ( which could need another £400 -£800 more at least)

Admiddely the cpu is pretty decent, lo-spec mobo by today's standards though, relatively budget (for 2Gb) ram, and nothing really over the top

I am not complaining about OCUK prices in anyway - just showing how £1000 not so long ago would get you near the top, nowadays gets you middle to lower (and when conroe comes out this will be a budget setup!!!)

Just food for thought

to OP though, yeah £4000 is too much money imo, very few need quad sli and the power consumption would be wallet busting by itself.

FrankJH it all comes down to your definition of capable and what you intend to do with your PC. You could also fairly easily get that way closer to the budget without losing any significant performance. :) I'd also disagree about prices being better before, I don't know how long you have been into computers and it does slightly go in cycles but I'd say that now in real terms you get far more performance for your money than you ever have done before. Nowadays even the most basic PC you can specify new can run any office application and browse the internet, watch films and create media(CDs, DVDs etc) without breaking a sweat, about 4-5 years back you would be looking at high-end systems for at least some of those tasks.

It all comes down to the law of diminishing returns and does with pretty any hobby/subject(computers, MTBs, cars, radio models etc etc ad infinitum) you care to name. The final 5-10% is what really costs the money, for say £2,000 you can build a PC that will come within 5-10% of the one that costs £4,000 but to reach the ultimate you have to spend the £2,000 extra or whatever it may be.

Going for what is effectively mid-range is the way I keep myself happy, last time I bought a PC was just over 18 months ago and was around £1,500 including a monitor but it is still a passable specification for what I do(A64 3400, 1gb Ram, 6800gt etc) so there is no point in upgrading just yet.

Can't emphasise this enough really. For instance, I have no interest in cars and when I started working in a garage (in accounts before you ask!), I couldn't believe how much some of these guys spent on their cars, omg! I mean, it does the exact same thing as mine does - goes from A to B. Why would you want to spend the kind of money they do?! Equally, they had no idea why I would want to spend the kind of money I do on a computer.

It's all willy waving in the end :D

If I was lighting my cuban cigars with £50 notes then I wouldn't think twice about spending 4k+ on a PC. If you are loaded you will spend silly money on your hobbies. Be it the new CRAY, that Aston Martin Vanquish or a lovely cruise ship lol.

I suppose it really depends where everyones interests lie. Some people dote on there cars, and do everything possible to make them better, while others like us spend lots of money on our computers, making them better & faster and generally trying to keep up with the technology as it arises.

But do you really have to spend £3,200 (from here - full systems) to get a really top-of-the-range machine? It looks like it could include liquid cooling or something, maybe a "customise" button with these costing so high, the least you want to do is upgrading. Im sure others would agree that it would work a lot better for everyone, even if it does take a lot longer to be ready, also a "finance deal" for this kind of money would be very helpful?

The last time I bought a new machine it cost me £1,700, and I thought that was really high, but now its increased even more! Its like someone keeps moving the goal posts :(

200 pounds for a psu :D If it can jumpstart my car then fair enough.

Four grand used to be fairly normal for a top spec pc at one time, pc have got so cheap now.
Poverty spec 486 in '93 was 800 pounds. 1k was cheap still. 2k was getting on for average and then 3 or 4k would have been your executive spec with a "19 monitor the size of a table.

Dont even ask about laptops, you could probably get the equalivant processing power as sat nav in a car (with free car) for the same price now
