the bike i m setting my eyes on is the Honda CBR125R brand new from dealership for £2,685 apparently they are doing 0% finance and throw in other stuff for the heck.

anyway I want to know if what other starter bikes are out there for me, and if i decide to go for second hand bikes what sort of things to look out for.

£2,600 on a 125, are you mad? You can pick up '04 CBR125's for £1,600. If you ask me, that is still far to much when you can pick up a decent CG 125 (which is the same bike without the tarty fairings) for £400.

I wouldn't pay that much on a 125 matey  That's way too much. Have a look at the MCN website Linkypoos and pop in what make and model you're after and also your postcode. You'll be amazed at what you can save ;)

Al :)

I would agree with people on here and look for 2nd hand, you can find one with only a few thousand miles on the clock for one hell of a lower price than that! When I got mine it had 650 miles on the clock, I paid £1850 and that was over 12 months ago when they were still quite a new bike. You could pick up a mint one with low mileage for £1600 no sweat today!

I'd seriously recommend 2nd hand, its a 4 stroke Honda, look after it and it will keep going and going. Service at regularly and it will be a very economical little bike, I know mine was!

Just check they have been serviced at 600, 2500 and 5000 miles, as long as they have a stamp you should be alright! Ask for receipts of any work carried out, most of the 04-on models were recalled due to an ignition coil failure (inc mine), other than that they should be fine :)

Mate if your planning on riding round the M25 each day I'd seriously consider getting a larger bike than a 125. There’s a silly amount of traffic plus a lot of it is out in the open with a lot of strong crosswinds, on a 125 you will find it very hard going.

If you’re old enough to do a DAS I’d opt for that then pick up a second hand faired commuter, if you’re not old enough I’d stick with a car until then.

thats an interesting thought nvr considered the size of the bikes yet with regard to cross wind. I only have to go across 5 junctions on M25 but i just have to go pass one fo the busiest which is M1 junction and Watford, usually the queue starts at the junction b4. so in real essence i don't have much to travel the journey is less than 40 miles and on a clear day the M25 stretch only takes about 15-20 min (in ym car i did) but i know that during peak hour traffic it can be hours.

well i am old enuf to get full bike license however i am not old enuf to make any real impact on the bike insurance which is the main thing that i am worried about as its likely to cost half as much as the bike...which leads to another questino is there any decent bike specialist insurer out there?

i m 26 this yr got 5 yr no claim on my car etc but no previous experience on bikes will that make things easier for me or not at all any differences?

Dude I bought the gsxr as my first bike at 26 and with no ncbs and with 8 hours of riding (including test) I got it insured for £1100 FC with Adrian Flux!!

It can be done

Insurance for a young first timer on a classic grey sports 400 (VFR, CBR, ZXR etc) can be found for around £400 :)

I was quoted £380 through Bennetts on a ZXR :) Thats at 20 with restricted test, 6 months experience on a 50cc and nothing else.

I'd echo whats been said really. If you where going to keep the 125 for a few years then fair enough, although they are incredibly reliable anyway so 2nd hand would still make more sense. Thing is though, once you've ridden it a few months I'll almost guarantee you will want a bigger bike, and you'd be left with a huge loss on a new 125, as you suffer when buying any new car or bike.

if you must have a 125, DO NOT get a cbr125R, they are appauling, an RS125 is a proper little bike. I have had a RS125 and a vfr 400, personally I had more fun on the 125 and learnt more on the 400, not that the 400 wasn't fun, just the 125 was such a laugh to ride.
In the market for a GSXR600 now.
Get your full test done, then have whatever you want, insurance isn't that scary!
if memory serves -
Gilera runner 125 - age 17 CBT - £400
RS125 age 17, full test - £3420
VFR 400 (restricted ;) ) age 18 - £500
then when I was 19 it was £400
They are all TPFT except the 125(fully comp, it was new) worst quotes I had were over £1000 on all bikes though, really worth shopping around, watch exesses too, can get high.
